A new zero calorie bubbly drink in Vietnam and a WAFFLE HOUSE???

We don't get a lot of new stuff here in Da Nang, Vietnam. Well, let me rephrase that-we do get new stuff, but the new stuff is normally exactly the same as the old stuff. The amount of coffee shops that have gone out of business only to be replaced by another coffee shop that also fails is pretty mind-blowing. Almost all the restaurants fail to differentiate from one to the next and this gets a bit frustrating when you have hundreds of restaurants in your quadrant of the city yet none of them have anything unique going on. I don't get it because when people actually DO open something that is unique and not just a carbon copy of all the other places, they tend to be popular and profitable yet the businesses here all just open the same crap.

The items that are available for you to take home are kind of all the same too. Sure we have 30 or so beers to choose from, but for the most part they are either cheap lagers, or horribly overpriced craft beers. Non alcoholic drinks are kind of all the same and if you thought the west put a lot of sugar in their drinks you might be surprised that they actually put MORE of it in drinks over here. The idea that South East Asians are healthy is a bunch of crap. They are poor and walk around a lot and many of them work really hard. I think that is why they stay slim.

Anyway, before I get too off topic I want to introduce this drink that I took a chance on in the minimart, because I think it is pretty great.

While diet drinks are all the rage in USA (as far as I know, haven't been there in years) they are almost non existent over here. So when something like this comes along and I actually like it, I end up buying a lot of them because they tend to not sell enough of them and wont be restocked even if I am buying all of them.

I have never heard of this brand so if you have it in your country, please let me know. That language on the bottom of the can (just to the left of Nadi) is not Vietnamese. I think it might be whatever the language is called in Malaysia. What say ye @davidke20 ? I think that is Japanese perhaps under the main logo, but I am extremely non-worldly when it comes to any languages other than Thai and English so I don't really know. It tastes pretty awesome and has no calories. I'm not sure if I believe all that they say on the can though because they also say "no artificial flavors" and well, since it tastes like apple and has no calories, how the hell can that be true.

Next up as far as new things go in town we have a legendary American diner, Waffle House.

if you've never been to a Waffle House just let me fill you in a bit. This is quite an old establishment in the USA that is known for serving breakfast all day and night and it also turns into a place that is known for having a lot of violence in it at night. Drunks go there and fight.

So we have been joking that we are going to get really drunk and then go into the new Da Nang Waffle House and keep the tradition going by starting unnecessary arguments with strangers. I'm just kidding of course, I would never do that. Also, the Waffle House we got here isn't (unfortunately) the real Waffle House.

In fact, the Waffle House we got here isn't even a building, it's just some rolling stand outside of some other building and they only sell waffles.

Before I left the US I went to Waffle House often and in the 10 years or so that I was a customer, I never once had a waffle there. I always got eggs and hash browns.

It is unlikely that I am ever going to eat at this Waffle House either even though 25k VND is extremely cheap to get anything. That is less than $1.

There is a new pizza place that just opened up called Infinity Pizza and they are a pizza by the slice sort of establishment and their entire business is built around being open 24 hours a day. Perhaps that is where all the drunken fights are taking place?

In the meantime I will just continue to hang out with my dog whenever the rain isn't falling like mad. We went out the other day and it started to rain so we ducked inside of this Irish Pub and daddy ordered a beer. Nadi took it in stride and almost immediately splooted on the floor.

She's a real cutie aint she? That's all I got for you guys today, hope you have a great day!

Sort:

I'd be interested to know what an "expensive" craft beer goes for over there. Here in the US they can be anywhere from $7 to $11 or so. It's pretty out of control. Some of them are just so good though. I've actually never been to a waffle house, but I have always wanted to try one. We used to have one in the town where I live, but they closed it down a while ago. Oddly enough, I feel like nothing is really new over here either. You have a new bar open up and they have basically the same menu as every other bar. The same five specialty burgers, a club, blt, Rueben, turkey rueben, Italian steak, philly.... You get the idea.

enjoy those Reubens bro. That is one thing that nobody over here seems to be able to do correctly and it is always disappointing when you get one. something about the bread and cheese mostly but I am not even 100% sure what they are doing wrong. I had one at a smokehouse that a Canadian owned and it had coleslaw on it instead of kraut. When I asked him why that was he said "that is how they are made in Canada" and I just said "well Canada is wrong."

I don't even know if he was telling the truth, his food is substandard on a lot of other fronts as well so he may have just made that up.

As far as expensive beers are concerned here it is just relative to the economy that I currently live in. A cheap lager that is widely available like a Bud would be for you, is normally around $1 in a bar. A craft beer at a well-known brewery will set you back normally around $6. So look at how much a bud costs and then multiply is by 6.

There are local craft breweries that sell the beers for far less, like $2, but they are not the same beers and they are something that is extremely local and it will tasted completely different from one batch to the next. That's not rally my cup a tea either because if it is that different each time I kind of wonder about QC in a general sense.

Oh yeah, that is quite a hike in price. I would have expected maybe $3 for a craft beer, but $6 isn't too far off from what you pay here. I've actually never had a Reuben in my life. I think for the longest time I had it in my head that I didn't like sauerkraut, so I just never bothered to try one. They do make sandwiches called "Rachels" that are basically a Reuben, but with Turkey instead of the corned beef or pastrami, and coleslaw instead of kraut. I've also seen hot pastrami sandwiches with coleslaw, so your Canadian guy might not be entirely wrong. I really need to try an actual Reuben now that I know I don't hate sauerkraut as much as I thought I did.

dude, try the Reuben. I would be incredibly surprised if you didn't like it. The sourkraut isn't overpowering because of all the other flavorst that are going on in there. On the rare instance that I find myself in the States I always tell whoever I am visiting that a reuben is something I definitely want to have while i am there. Even a bad reuben in the states is much better than a good one over here.

I find that quite funny that someone would think you could create a business just selling waffles. Maybe in the 1950's but it is the name more than anything whilst selling everything but waffles. We are going to a creperie tomorrow and haven't had a crepe in about 15 years. Only reason I am going is I have not seen a restaurant dedicated to creperies and I am curious to see what they do.

These small shacks I think are able to do it because they have next to no overhead. It's just some folding tables and a few chairs and all the prep is done somewhere else. The sidewalk area where they operate isn't even legal and once the police decide that they are going to take the land back they are out of business.

Almost none of these roadside things, no matter what they are selling, manage to stay open long term. There are a few standouts that end up getting a building later because they are so outstanding but these waffles wont' be one of them since this is a very common things that anyone with a waffle iron can easily replicate.

Correct. That's common Bahasa language both Indonesian and Malaysian can understand. It says

Minuman berperisa epal hijau berkabonat

And that's the exact translation of a carbonated green apple flavored drink.

thanks, while I don't speak it I can normally ID it when I see it.

In general asian countries, you need to be extremely careful with how they word their marketing campaign. "No added sugar" does not mean it has no sugar 😂 like for example. "No artificial flavor" does not mean it does not have synthetic flavor. Check the chemical compound (nutrition facts)

I like it when the box of juice says 100% natural! then you look at the ingredients and it is 112 items long including science words that nobody even knows what it means. I don't recall seeing a "yellow number 7" tree when I was growing up.

Well you got me! I got baited into believing an actual Waffle House was coming to town. I miss that place as well but the ones in Texas also had a reputation for being where all the best fights would happen at 2-4am.

yeah i'll admit that the clickbait title was intentional. I hope you found it entertaining anyway.

People that have never been to a Waffle House and aren't really even sure what it is have heard about it being a place where fights happen regularly. It's kind of a global icon.

Here in Da Nang we have 2 locations near my house where fights regularly happen and they are both 24-hour places. One is a sportsbar and the other is a 24-hour pizza place. It's the booze, not the surroundings and I kind of admire the patience of the people that work there because they don't have any security or any way of making the fights stop once they begin. I hope they get paid a bit more for working these hours.

I love Waffle House. 2nd best place to make fun of Rednecks at.. Walmart being first of course.

Boy Howdy.

I always liked it as well. I have no idea what it costs these days, I would presume too much, but back in the day in the 90's and early 2000's it was a tremendous value.

Oh it's expensive af nowadays.. breakfast used to be 8 bucks.. now it's closer to 15.. drinks are extra

if i EVER spend more than $10 on a meal over here in Vietnam it is because I am having a huge feast or there are alcoholic beverages involved as well. Its disappointing to see that all the values in the states appear to have dried up. It was a while ago, but when I was in college I remember that you could go into Taco Bell with 5 dollars and get in line with confidence. They you would be able to order with reckless abandon and end up with change in the end. I would imagine there are not many things on the menu at all that are under $5 these days.

Thanks for posting in the ASEAN Hive Community.
