Happy Wednesday Hivers!
Life begins at 40,” as they say.
Last Monday, my younger brother celebrated his 40th birthday. However, we held the celebration in advance since some of our family members couldn’t attend on the actual day due to important work commitments.

Our eldest sister really loves surprises. Every time someone in the family celebrates a milestone birthday, like turning 20, 30, or 40, she always wants to plan a surprise celebration.

Actually, it was quite challenging to surprise him because he already had plans that day, he was supposed to go somewhere in the southern part of Cebu. So we had to act a bit and come up with a story just to convince him to cancel his trip and have dinner instead at our father’s house.

We divided the tasks among ourselves as siblings, one was in charge of convincing him, another took care of ordering the food in advance, and someone else planned out who would handle the decorations at the house. That way, the workload was lighter and everything was more organized.

Since our eldest sister sponsored the food, she was the one who placed the order. Even though she’s in Canada, it was easy for her to arrange everything because she already knows someone here who handles food orders.
Usually, whenever we have occasions at home, we just order food instead of cooking. And because we have elderly family members, we make sure the menu isn’t all meat and oily dishes.

Since I had work that Saturday, I asked my younger brother to pick me up so we could go together to our father’s house, where we planned to celebrate his birthday. It worked out well for everyone because that way, someone could update the rest once we were nearby. So, as soon as we entered the subdivision gate, I informed them that we were already close.

While he was parking his car, I went ahead and entered the house first. When I got inside, my other siblings and our father were already prepared. They were hiding behind the door, and one of my sisters was holding the birthday cake.

As soon as he entered, we all started singing “Happy Birthday.” He was completely caught off guard and couldn’t do anything but laugh nonstop. Before we let him blow the candles, we made him make a wish first.

We asked him if he had any idea that we were planning to surprise him, and he said he didn’t notice anything at all. It was just a simple birthday celebration with the family, but even though it was small, we were all happy that each of us made time to celebrate such a special occasion together.
