The Hospitable Side of Us: When Our Relatives Visited Us in Leyte

Happy Sunday Hivers!

One of the traits Filipinos are known for is being hospitable. Many foreigners who have visited the Philippines have also noticed this. It is one of the reasons why many of them love to come back for vacation or even choose to live in the Philippines.

Whenever we see new faces in our area, we approach them with a smile and offer help if needed. We never just leave them on their own. This is why people say that in the Philippines, you are never alone, Filipinos will always extend a helping hand within their capacity. It is one of the traits we are truly proud of.

Last Saturday, the daughter of my cousin from Cebu arrived and visited us before heading to the place they originally came to Leyte for. They will be attending a wedding this week, but instead of going directly to the southern part of Leyte, they decided to stop by our house first. She informed me three days ago that they would visit us on their way. It also made us happy because it’s not often that relatives from my father’s side get to visit us,

When I informed my mother about their visit, she immediately became excited. In fact, as soon as she found out, she already started planning what food to prepare for them. That’s actually one of the common traits of Filipinos, we instantly think about what we can serve our guests.

While we were chatting, they also informed us that they would be staying at our house for 2 nights. Of course, we were happy to have them sleep at our place. As soon as we learned about it, we prepared a room for them. Although we regularly clean it, my mother still made sure that everything was spotless. She prepared the pillows and bedsheets to make them feel comfortable.

However, one day before they arrived, my mother got sick. Because of that, the food she originally planned to prepare was no longer possible, so we just bought roasted chicken from the market instead.

When they arrived, my mother mostly stayed lying down because she was not feeling well, so it was only my brother and me who entertained them. They also brought their son, which made the house feel lively because he was very playful and noisy.

As soon as they saw the sea, they immediately spent time at the beach. The next day, they woke up very early and went straight for a swim. They kept saying how beautiful our place was because they really loved the peaceful view and surroundings.

Their visit may have been short, but it brought happiness and warmth to our home. Even though my mother got sick and we were not able to prepare everything we originally planned, we still did our best to make them feel welcome and comfortable. Moments like this remind me how deeply rooted hospitality is in Filipino culture. Whether through preparing food, arranging a room, or simply spending time together, Filipinos always try to make their guests feel at home.

That's the beauty of being a Filipino.. wherever we maybe reached, Filipinos are really hospitable..an attitude one must be proud of...

You're relatives are so lucky to have and your family as you are very hospitable -- taking good care of their needs despite not feeling well..

They were also okay because they helped in preparing the food as well.

That’s how we Filipinos are, hospitable, helpful, and always willing to lend a hand.
