I don't what has gotten in my mind that I was suddenly craving Korean steamed egg. So I consulted the Youtube university for some recipes and found some easy to follow.
Surprisingly, the basic Korean steamed egg is so easy to make with very few ingredients. Eggs, water, fish sauce, sesame oil, sesame seeds, and scallions.
I know I can do it so I gathered the ingredients and began to cook my first Korean steamed egg!
In a small pot, I whisk 3 eggs and added 1 cup of water and about a tablespoon of fish sauce. I'd like to replicate the sweet taste of the steamed egg at the samgyupsal restaurant my friends and I have eaten before so I also added a teaspoon of sugar. And since this is my version, I also added some mirin. I don't know if I should've added that but I just trusted my instinct.
The tutorials online say mix it until lumps form. However, 10 minutes have already passed yet the mixture was still liquid. There were lumps forming but only very few.
I got tired and covered the pot. Viola! After a minute the egg mixture began to solidify.
I thought I was finally doing it right until I noticed the water on top wasn't getting sipped by the steamed egg. What I did was scoop the excess water instead.
Then I added some sesame oil and sesame seed. I am praying I cooked it correctly because by the looks of it, it seemed like I did something wrong. It looked different from the steamed eggs online.
Since I don't have scallions I opted to use dried parsley instead. I know, please don't judge me. Lol.

I think I've set my expectations too high because excitement went down the drain after taking my first bite. It was bland and nothing sweet like what I had before. The steamed egg was also watery when you chew it. Maybe I should've added only little water and also added chicken broth to make it flavorful. Also, maybe I shouldn't have whisked the mixture too much that it became like scrambled eggs.
You probably thought this is going to be a successful trial. Well, welcome to my misery corner!
Good thing, I also made some noodles with beef samgyup meat. It saved me from my disappointment that night. I also added some thin slices of carrots to fool myself that it's a healthy food.
Then I paired the steamed egg and noodles with a matcha drink with yogurt. The drink was so good! Thank God for matcha! Anyway, can you see the water residue on the steamed egg? Yikes!
I don't think I would be making steamed egg again. I would rather fry or boil the eggs next time. They'll complement better with noodles. Anyway, I still ate it because it would be a waste to throw it.
Thanks for reading! 💚
