There is a very big difference between the soul and the spirit.
Let's look at the life of a believer and a non-believer.
The believer and the non-believer all have a body that carries them through life. They also have hearts and their hearts are comprised of the soul and and the spirit. Now, the difference is in the unbeliever, their spirit is dormant. The spirit is still there because we are all made in the image of God, regardless of what we believe, but it is just not activated. Because the non-believer has not been saved.
Whereas, with the believer the spirit is actually it's own separate thing, separate from the soul. The spirit is it's own activated thing and It represents God in us . When we talk about an unbeliever, we are talking about a body and soul. But for the believer there is a body, soul and an activated spirit.
All this is very important. The moment we are born again, we become a house divided against itself. The spirit and the soul become at war with one another. This is like our love for Jesus battling with our love for self,desires and aspirations.
What happens if a house divided against itself? We will know from
Mark 3:25
"And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand".
We need Jesus to save our soul and spirit from falling.
