Ephesians 6:1-4
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'—which is the first commandment with a promise—'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.' Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."
Verses 1-3: Children's Responsibility
"Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. 'Honor your father and mother'—which is the first commandment with a promise—'so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.'"
Obey your parents in the Lord:
Obedience: Children are instructed to obey their parents, indicating respect and adherence to their guidance.
In the Lord: This phrase suggests that the obedience should be in accordance with Christian principles. Children should obey their parents as long as their instructions align with God's will.
For this is right:
Moral Duty: Obedience to parents is presented as a moral and ethical duty that is inherently right.
Honor your father and mother:
Commandment with a Promise: This commandment is highlighted as the first one with an attached promise, underscoring its significance.
Promise of Well-being and Longevity: The promise is that honoring one's parents will lead to a prosperous and long life. This reflects the Old Testament teaching found in Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16.
Verse 4: Parents' Responsibility
"Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord."
Do not exasperate your children.
Avoid Provocation - Parents, particularly fathers, are advised not to provoke or frustrate their children. This can mean avoiding harsh, unfair, or inconsistent treatment that could lead to resentment and discouragement.
Bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord:
Positive Guidance - Parents are encouraged to nurture their children through proper training and education in the ways of the Lord. This involves teaching them about God's principles, values, and instructions.
Spiritual and Moral Education - The focus is on raising children with a strong foundation in their faith, helping them grow into responsible and godly individuals.
Summary
Ephesians 6:1-4 emphasizes the reciprocal responsibilities within the parent-child relationship:
Children - Obey and honor your parents as a righteous and God-pleasing duty, with the promise of well-being and longevity.
Parents - Do not provoke or frustrate your children, but instead, raise them with proper guidance and instruction in the Lord's ways.
The overall message is one of mutual respect, love, and responsibility, fostering a harmonious and spiritually grounded family environment.
