The time my seafood feast almost 💀 me(Mexico Adventure)
Last December, I went to Mexico for the Guadalajara International Book Fair. Like any good Cuban who sets foot outside Cuba, I spent most of my time eating and taking pictures of everything I ate.
I didn’t post any of these photos on my social media because one of those delicious feasts almost took me out.
Turns out, I’m allergic to iodine. It’s only a severe reaction with pure iodine. The iodine in most seafood usually just makes me a little dizzy—like I’m tipsy without drinking. When that happens and I start slurring my words, I stop eating, pop an antihistamine, and call it a day.
But, being Cuban, I had never seen so much seafood, so varied, all in one place. So I threw caution to the wind and ate like I’d never see food again. And I almost didn’t! 💀
That night was brutal—the next day, I needed paramedics twice. It ruined the rest of my trip because I couldn’t drink alcohol and had to watch everything I ate.
Aside from the near-death experience, Mexican food is incredible—so diverse and flavorful. Sadly, I don’t handle spice well, so I missed out on trying a lot of dishes the right way. Still, what I had was delicious. Worth the risk? Maybe not. Worth the memories? Absolutely.
