RE: Early Halloween Party in Hiroshima!

in Liketu3 months ago

Thank you for curating my post, @iamraincrystal ✌︎︎

Halloween is an interesting example of how something foreign is imported and then transformed by the Japanese. In the late 20th century Tokyo Disneyland started doing Halloween parades which focused on costume parades that went beyond traditional ghostly themes. That prompted other theme parks to follow suit. Then, in this century social media played a big role in spreading the idea of Halloween and especially of Halloween as "cosplay" with young people dressing up as Disney or anime characters and gathering in public places. The centre of Hiroshima will be packed with young people dressed up in all sorts of different costumes next weekend, I expect.

Japan makes me think of anime. I imagine lots of cosplay for timeless anime characters !LOL locally, I believe this costume wearing tradition is limited to more exclusive areas. Local tradition still makes families get together and gather in cemeteries a few days before the day of the dead. We usually just pay respect to our dearly departed. Happy Sunday to you!
