Sotomixs & Cocomixs
Warm Soto & Fresh Coconut Water on the Streets of Ngawi

Some time ago, I stayed at my brother’s house in Ngawi city, East Java, Indonesia. We explored the city while looking for a light but filling breakfast. My brother found an interesting eatery called Sotomixs & Cocomixs.

When I first saw the place from the outside, it look pretty small and simple. There were young coconuts scattered everywhere out front, so I honestly thought it was just coconut drink stall. But I was totally wrong.

Once I stepped inside, I realized the place actually stretches pretty far back. The front area is where they sell various coconut drinks, but in the back, there’s a whole separate space for serving different types of soto. I didn’t expect that at all it really caught me by surprise.

Upon seeing the menu, I was immediately confused because there so many "Soto" options. Here, you can choose between soto with coconut milk or clear soto, and each type has a variety of fillings like free-range chicken, tripe, liver, beef tendon, beef ribs, and even beef tongue. Seriously, I didn’t expect such a small stall to have so many variants!

I ended up going with the clear soto with village chicken. Looked simple, but I had a good feeling about it. The broth looked light, but the smell? Super inviting. The first spoonful totally caught me off guard it was this cozy mix of chicken and beef broth that somehow felt both rich and clean.

The chicken was surprisingly tender. Like, not chewy at all, and it didn’t get stuck between my teeth (which honestly, I half expected from village chicken). They also added, some celery, and crispy fried onions on top, it smelled amazing. When I add a little sweet soy sauce and lime juice, it tasted even better. hahaha

What I like most is how comfortable it feels in the stomach. Warm, light, and satisfying, exactly the kind of comfort food you’d want for breakfast or even a lazy lunch without that post meal sleepiness.

Not stopping there, the table also had a variety of side dishes available like fried tempeh, stuffed tofu, potato cakes, satay intestines, quail egg satay, lungs, and heart and gizzard. Just grab what you like, and they'll count it when you pay. Eating "soto" here becomes even better, allowing you to snack while sipping the warm broth.

After feeling full and warm, it was time to look for something refreshing. At the front of the stall, there was a Cocomixs booth selling various young coconut drinks with different toppings. I ordered the original young coconut drink, while my relative tried the one with milk.

When it arrived, the drink looked ordinary, a large plastic cup filled with young coconut and ice. But once I took a sip, wow, it was incredibly refreshing.! It tasted completely natural, sweet from the coconut, and the ice provided total refreshment for the throat.

At first, I thought young coconut drinks were only suitable for the afternoon, but drinking it in the morning was just as delightful. It turned out to be a perfect finish after eating soto. Drinking coconut water in the morning? Not a mistake, but a great idea! 😄

The eatery is indeed simple. Don't imagine a restaurant with air conditioning and aesthetic interiors. But that’s what makes it comfortable. The atmosphere is warm and friendly, typical of a street stall. Many young people, small families, and even online motorcycle taxi drivers stop by to eat here. The sellers are also friendly and quick, even though it was quite crowded at the time.

And what amazed me the most, I only spent around 150.000 rupiah for 6 people! Everyone eat soto, drink coconut water, and added fried snacks and satay. For such delicious flavors, that price is definitely very affordable. This is truly a hidden culinary gem in Ngawi worth visiting.

If you're in Ngawi and want to explore the culinary scene without spending a lot, Sotomixs & Cocomixs is a must try. Soto to warm the stomach, and coconut water to refresh the mind is the perfect combination of homey flavors at friendly prices.

Personally, I'll definitely come back if I have the chance to go to Ngawi again. I’m curious to try the beef tendon and tongue soto, and maybe this time, I'll try the young coconut with milk plus durian topping to indulge my taste buds even more! 😄
