PLANTAIN AND IT'S VARIETIES

Plantain is a popular food delicacy that is common in Africa, but one thing I realized is that other countries called it a big banana. It's so funny how that is called a big banana but at the same time I kind of Reason with it.

In Nigeria however, there is a difference between plantain and banana, plantain is known to be a food delicacy that can be eaten whether ripe, too ripe, unripe or half ripe. While banana is a fruit that is meant to be eaten raw. No doubt people can also also cut open a ripe plantain and eat it raw.

In essence, plantain in Nigeria can be used in different ways as we tend to be creative whenever we are preparing foods so that we can enjoy it in different varies. As a lover of plantain, there are different ways that these delicacy can be used to satisfy one's cravings. Plantain can be cooked as boiled unripe plantain, boiled ripe plantain, Dodo, bole, porridge, chips, swallow and so many more.

This can be enjoyed alongside various delicacies such as jollof rice, egg sauce, tomato sauce, vegetable sauce, beans, stew, groundnut and so on. In addition, they are many health benefits packed in plantains, some of which includes: the ability to Aids digestion, prevents constipation,supports gut health, carbohydrates, helps with blood pressure. The unripe plantain is know to be the most healthiest as it helps to control blood sugar, support bone heath and bosst immune system, it is rich in nutrients and vitamins like A, C and B6

The season is favorable as the growth of these trees are booming and they are readily available in the market for purchase. Although they could be more expensive in the city than in villages, Nigerians are so in love with this delicacy that the price can never be a detering factor not to consume it.

Plantain truly is a treasure in our kitchens how versatile it is from dodo to bole and even porridge. It is amazing that something so simple can be enjoyed in so many delicius ways. And yes the unripe one really does have great health benefits..
