Lentinus Squarrosulus - Nature's Best Gift!

in FungiFridayyesterday

Hello fungi lovers, it's Friday again, a special day to share about our fungiscapade. Lol. I sure did have a bit of fungiscapade, not in the woods though, and I'm excited to share with you the few photos of the mushroom I snapped.

And here they are - Lentinus squarrosulus also know as Shaggy ink cap or Scaly lentinus. Locally, we call it *Atakata elo simply meaning

This fascinating mushroom, Lentinus squarrosulus is commonly found in tropical regions and they grow on dead woods or decaying desidous trees. With Nigeria being a tropic region, Lentinus squarrosulus is one of the many mushrooms that can be found growing here especially in the Eastern part, Abia State to be precise, although not all parts of the state.

I spotted the mushrooms growing on dead logs of wood right in my sister's yard. The logs of wood are the remains of an avocado tree that was cut down some months ago. Here's the kicker, this specie of mushroom is very much edible. Ta daa! 😀

I can easily identify the due to its unique appearance, earthy flavor and rough texture. Also it grows in clusters and takes a few days to spread out well, ready to be foraged.

Lentinus squarrosulus is one of my favorite edible mushrooms, tastes great in soups and packed with essential nutrients like protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals like phosphorus, potassium, iron etc.

Lentinus squarrosulus is tasty, nutritious and is said to contain medicinal properties which can be used support overall health and wellbeing. Just so you know, the price of this mushroom doesn't come cheap, but it's worth any penny you spend. Hehehe.

Have you come across this mushroom before or had the opportunity of eating it? I'd love to know. Thanks.
