When I was little, all I wanted to do is grow up very fast and I remember when I used to wear my mum heels and other accessories and I learned most of those in the television. I wanted to be like all those big girls in the television but I never knew there was more to adulthood. What I expected adulthood to be isn’t what it is but I’m grateful about my adulthood experiences. They’re never bad.
At what age does one stop being a minor in my country?
I’m from Nigeria and one is expected to stop being a minor at the age of 18. Once you’re 18, you’re expected to have gained a certain level of knowledge about different things and you’d be independent. Well, a lot of people are very happy about the freedom that comes from being 18 years of age and they believe they can smoke, drink alcohol, go clubbing and others. We’re in the Generation Z so I feel y’all should agree with me on this thought.
Do I feel it is too soon or too late?
I feel it is too soon. If we were in the ancient days, I must have said it is too late but let’s take a look at what the world is like now. We’ve got many negative vices even than the positive ones and that’s why people are easily influenced. A lot of people make mistakes at their early stage of life which mostly came from the fact that they gained independence at an early stage without thinking they were still quite young to be independent.
How old do I feel one should be independent?
I feel one should stop being a minor at the age of 20. Let me start from here. There are so many things we have learned since we were small and the majority of us still inculcate those habits till today. At the same time, we learn new things everyday and in a whole year, we can’t count how many things we have learned. So I feel one can’t spend two decades of life without having a reasonable knowledge of life or how to live life. You can’t be perfect but two decades in your life should make be able to do some certain things in your life all by yourself.
Does age really matter when it comes to maturity?
Age matters a lot and that’s why so many old people tend to be wiser. Why do you think we seek advices from elderly people when we are experiencing some new things? It’s because they must have experienced it or have an idea. At the same time, we tend to have some young people in the body of an old person so age does not matter at all time or in all situations.
Life is unpredictable though and that’s why we’re meant for each other. The old ones learn from the younger ones and vice versa. No one is perfect and no one is the most wise. The fact that I said one has to be 20 before he becomes independent does not mean he or she knows it all. We’re all for ourselves.
