Back in the good old days like the 80's and 90's major new outlets tended to be neutral unlike today where they take a hard political side and try to skew all the news to fit their version of reality. It's hard to trust the major networks in the US, you have to search out truly independent views which are very hard to find...

When we invest a little time in mining these sources, we soon have a few options at hand and can alternate (in order to keep our time well spent) reading one, then another, and then another source about the current issues.
In other words, to stay a little up to date on everything and to be able to compare it with what the mainstream media publishes. Always have an "independent" opinion to compare and spot discrepancies that may indicate a bias towards one side or the other.
