Tuesday night, January 9. It has been a beautiful and peaceful day, the kind of days I love to have in my #life. My closest sister called today and we had a pleasant telephone chat. In these times, maintaining contact thanks to networks and calls is something that is comforting, despite physical distances.
There is not much more to talk about my personal things. I might just have to point out that it's been a particularly cold day for a tropical country, but that's normal for this part of the year. Furthermore, I live in a mountainous area that usually has a fairly cool climate and frequent breezes.
Since there is nothing left to say about me, let's move on to comment on the anniversary that I chose for today, which is one on the topic of #food, but this time it is a day dedicated to a #fruit. It's 'Apricot Day'.

Noche del martes, 9 de enero. Ha sido un día hermoso y tranquilo, del tipo de días que amo tener en mi #vida. Mi hermana más cercana llamó hoy y tuvimos una agradable charla telefónica, en estos tiempos mantener el contacto gracias a las redes y a las llamadas es algo que consuela, a pesar de las distancias físicas.
No hay mucho más que contar de mis cosas personales. Quizás solo tenga que señalar que ha sido un día particularmente frío para un país tropical, pero eso es normal en esta parte del año. Además, vivo en una zona montañosa que suele tener un clima bastante fresco y de brisa frecuente.
Siendo que no queda nada que decir de mí, mejor pasemos a comentar sobre la efeméride que escogí para hoy, que es una del tema de la #comida, pero en esta oportunidad es un día dedicado a una #fruta. Es el ‘Día del Albaricoque’.

This fruit is part of the peach family, which is a fruit that I know well and have consumed on many occasions. The #apricot is also called: Damask, chabacano, mayuelo or albérchigo. Por cierto, el origen de esta festividad es por un día nacional de celebración establecido en Estados Unidos en 1977, por el Departamento de Agricultura de Estados Unidos. Y si bien los primeros ejemplares de esta planta que llegaron al continente viajaron de mano de colonos británicos (siglo XVIII), que se establecieron en la costa de Virginia. La cosa cierta es que su mayor éxito vino de mano de colonizadores españoles, que la introdujeron y cultivaron en California, creo que en San Diego.
A pesar de lo bueno que nos parezca la fruta, en realidad hubo que esperar hasta el siglo XX (1916) para que se estableciera un cultivo extensivo y de gran valor comercial, hecho que vino de la mano de John Muir y Luther Burbank. Es a partir de esta fecha que se aumenta su presencia y valor, llegando en unas décadas a convertirse en una de las frutas más consumidas en su mercado interno.
En lo personal, recuerdo haber comido albaricoques en almíbar, en conserva y en mermelada, pero admito que me resulta una fruta exótica. Estoy más familiarizado con los duraznos. Sin embargo, me gustaría mucho poder probar un día de estos estas frutas frescas. Supongo que es uno de esos deseos que tendré en mi lista de ‘pendientes de realizar’ (sonrisa personal).
