It was our country's 68th National Day. Happy Independence Day, Malaysia 🇲🇾!!!
We celebrated it as a family at night. Since we had not been to Saloma Bridge, my husband decided to drive all the way to Kampung Baru side to have dinner there and then a short walk to Saloma Bridge. The journey took longer than it expected because it was traffic jam everywhere. Phew!
Dinner at Wanjo Nasi Lemak!
Address: 8, Jalan Raja Muda Musa, Kampung Baru, 50300 Kuala Lumpur, Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur
This is the famous 'nasi lemak' spot and even famous among the tourist. 'Nasi lemak' is our country's most sought-after food, suitable for breakfast, lunch, dinner and supper, made of fragrant coconut milk rice, eat together with cucumber, boiled eggs, roasted peanuts and anchovies, 'sambal' and the choice of your protein. If you are at Malaysia, the first food you must eat is 'nasi lemak'.
Ambience & Menu
The shop is incredibly spacious, and the whole center area is where the array of nasi lemak condiments are arranged. People queued up to make their order, choose the protein they want, and proceed to payment. We have here fried chicken, rendang chicken, rendang beef, curry chicken, sambal sotong, sambal clam, and 'bergedil' which is the fried mashed potatoes with vegetables and minced beef (round shape).
We felt so festive with our Malaysia flags hung everywhere, the locals and tourists walking around, many were holding Malaysia flags, some children had drawn Malaysia flags on their faces. Cars can be seen with flags too! I am proud to be a Malaysian, a multiracial country, peaceful and harmonious.
Food & drinks we ordered
My husband ordered nasi lemak with sambal clam, my eldest son ordered nasi lemak with fried chicken. My youngest son ordered nasi lemak with 'bergedil'. And I chose nasi lemak with curry chicken drumsticks. We added one fried egg to our nasi lemak too.
On top of that, we ordered a plate of sambal cuttlefish to be shared among us three, it was too spicy for my youngest son.
For drinks, we ordered iced milk tea and iced syrup, to be shared among us 4.
Look at my eldest son who loves to eat nasi lemak using hands. It is part of our culture here among the majority to dine with their hands. My husband and my eldest son are really good in it. My youngest son and I prefer the old school way, fork and spoon.
After finished eating, I was drawn towards the fruit shop. Been noticing lots of people buying the avocado smoothie, I couldn't resist. It was such creamy avocado smoothie with chocolate syrup. Such a perfect combination. Yums!
Saloma Bridge
Then we took a short 10-minute walk to Saloma bridge. While on the way, my son saw this mascot and wanted a photo, so here!
In conjunction with our National Day, the lighting from our Twin Tower and the Saloma Bridge is based on our National flag colours. It was beautiful.
The Saloma bridge was so crowded that day, we barely able to walk properly. Once we reached the bridge, we gathered around my husband to watch badminton live, our Malaysia team go go go!!!
After about 25 minutes, it was time to head back. All of us were super thirsty due to the cramp and high humidity. We walked back to where we parked our car, ordered take-away drinks of watermelon juices. Such a quenching drink! Then we hopped into the car for our next destination — midnight movie Demon Slayer at the cinema. We reached home at about 2am 1st September. What a productive celebration haha!
