Travel Post 41 - Snacks Shopping + Trying Out KFC In Meizhou, China

in Worldmappinyesterday

Hello. Our travel group explore more of Meizhou, China near out hotel.

There is snacks shopping at this inexpensive store plus we try out Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in China.

Snacks Shopping

There is a snacks & candy store in the area. Prices are very low if you convert dollars into Chinese Yuan. A small bag of chips for 5 Yuan?! This is around 1 Canadian Dollar.

The chips flavours are different than in the Toronto area. There are chip flavours that I have never seen or tried. Flavours include:

  • Cucumber
  • Lime
  • Texas Grilled BBQ
  • Mexican Chicken
  • Italian Red Meat Flavor

I do remember buying one chip bag with one of these flavours. It might have been the Texas Grilled BBQ one. The taste was very similar to regular BBQ flavour chips.

They also sell chips in a sideways packaging. About 3 Yuan for this is really inexpensive. That is around 60 cents Canadian. Cost of living is really low here in Meizhou. (But they don't make that much money.)

Some Night Photos

In the previous travel post, we were in the area to buy Chinese lanterns. Later in the evening we revisit that area to buy more Chinese lanterns. I took some night photos while walking around. These photos are very colourful.

KFC In Meizhou, China

KFC In China Is Different

Up to this point we have traveled around 10 days into China. We have passed by a couple of KFC places across various locations. The KFC restaurants on the outside here in China look much better than in the Toronto area in Ontario, Canada. KFCs in China can be busy and actually have some nice items on their menu.

Kids Play Area?!!?

This particular KFC location has a nice play area. This play area is not as big as McDonald's play areas in some locations but it is still spacious enough for the kids to use.

There is a projector touch screen where the kids can move the bouncy balls around. I do have short clips but I am not sure how to upload them here. At that time the kids were having lots of fun given how loud they were around 8PM on a Saturday evening.

Whole Chicken From KFC

To our surprise they offered a whole chicken on the menu. We decided to try one along with a few burgers.

This chicken is not very big. It is small compared to chickens in Canada. Maybe these Chickens in China are not fed with hormones and are natural. The price for this small KFC rotisserie chicken was something like 5 Canadian dollars. China cost of living is low compared to Toronto.

This visit was in September 2024. I don't remember this taste. There have been some cumin and five spice powder in the taste. The chicken was moist and juicy for the most part. Given the low price and 10 minute wait time (or less), this chicken was good.

The KFC burgers we ordered were fried chicken burgers. One fried piece of chicken in a bun mostly. Not awful but not amazing. It was okay.

The price for this chicken and burgers was just under 65 Chinese Yuan (CNY). Converting this to Canadian dollars (estimated 5 CNY for 1 CAD) is 13 CAD.

If this stuff was offered in Canada (Toronto area) I am sure the price would be double of 13 CAD.

Thank you for reading.
