I don't blame you for being cautious. Like you rightly said, the internet fraudsters are upgrading daily and if she hadn't called you, I'm sure you would have thought maybe her whatsapp was hacked. Similar thing happened between a friend of mine and I and a simple willing dialogue was all that resolved it just like your friend and you.n
