Gone are the days…

Back in the days when we were in primary school and secondary. I couldn’t say our time as students was the worst experience, but we actually met the academic system when it was still strict and valuable.

I remember some of the textbooks we used in school then. Those books are evergreen till date. They were published by some of the best publishers then. But recently I don't think those textbooks are in existence anymore.

I remembered the likes of MacMillan textbooks, Lantern books, and Ngo. C. Ugo and many more. Oooh. These are nice textbooks. Most times when we work on these books I find myself connected to being educated. These are the benefits of listening and paying attention to what’s taught in class.

Back then you don't want to miss out on the fun we derive from reading these books and also some of the problem solving too. They are actually fun. But the sad part about schooling is when it comes to punishment or receiving strokes of canes.

There are teachers we fear a lot then. We see them as crazy ones. Those who know nothing other than beating at any single mistakes. And there are some we would never want them to leave our class because their class is never boring at all. I don't know if i should say it's their class that is not boring or the subject they are teaching us that's so easy to understand.

To most students the aspect that brings about flogging or punishment is when you don't do your assignments before coming to school the next day. Just know you are in a pot of soup. Or there is a classwork where you get to fail woefully despite all of the effort the teacher made.

Though there are times when we receive collective punishment for making noise in our class. All of these are what make schooling a fun experience though it wasn’t fun at all back then. I remember how we are always happy when it's friday just in anticipation for the weekend to come.

Nowadays, it is said that they would be passing on the “No cane” system of education. Though it’s actually a nice one. But I don't like a system like that. Especially with the children of this generation. Everything is getting worse. Most of these children are not ready to study and don't even want to fear anymore. Since they know there is nothing a teacher can do to them. At worse is to scold them.

There was an incident I witnessed where a student in the junior secondary school walked out of the classroom. While the teacher was in their class. I saw no reason to walk out on your own when it's not the teacher that sent you out.

There are some other classes too that they dictate when a teacher should come into their class and when not to. All of these i presume are happening because there is lack of discipline and there is no fear in the mind of these students.

If discipline were to be in place none of them would try such.

It will surprise you to know that not even canes can instill any fear into kids of today. They should just use other forms of punishment for them because these kids? You really can’t tell them nothing

You just took us down memory lane on the textbooks we used those days, the likes of McMillan and others. The good old days.

On the textbooks, they were the best and still the best👌

No cane policy is causing a lot in 5he school system of today. My take is they should bring back cane to instill discipline. However caution can be made mandatory to teachers.
