ONIONS: THE NUTRITIONAL POWERHOUSE

There is something about carefully planning a meal for a guest, ensuring that all the ingredients are added in the perfect proportion and then after serving your guests, you watch them eat as you chit-chat as well. But, in some situations, there is always a cause for concern - the people that eat up every other thing but leave their onions untouched on the plate. Well, it is not as if they disliked the onions totally but they have personal preferences to how that very ingredient that add nutritional value and flavor to meals should be served.

I must confess that I feel somewhat disappointed when I see someone leaving thier onions untouched on their plate. It might sound odd but there is a feeling that such act leaves in the mind considering the nutritional values that they posses. Over the years, I have got several reasons when I probe some of these people that are close to me. 1000086884.jpgSome of the reasons include, 'I don't like onions' for the ones that for an unknown reason don't enjoy consuming it. Other reasons are 'I don't like big slices of onions in ny food. I prefer when they are not visible. For instance I don't mind if they are smoothly ground up or thinly sliced'. While the latter reason may be valid, I still find it hard to understand how someone can decide to miss out on the numerous health benefits that onions provide to the human body.

The use of onions in my meals are non-negotiable. They are a constant ingredient in any dish I prepare. Let's say for instance that I'm in the process of preparing a meal and I realized that I'm out of onions, I will not think about it twice before I stop everything I'm doing and rush down to get some. No matter the extent of my hunger I always make time for slicing some onions. In fact, onions are so essential to me that I chew them raw sometimes - much to the surprise of a friend who walked in on me in the middle of preparing a meal. Through her reaction I could tell that it was strange to her but I was able to enlighten her about the benefits of onions to the body in my own little way.

Onion has the ability to support digestive system in the body. They contain certain compounds that promote healthy digestion, ease bowel movements and to a large extent reduce the risks of developing a gastric ulcer. They also contain properties that help to reduce the risk of cancer, whicn makes them more essential in our daily diet.

However, the most common health benefits of onions to the human health is the positive impact on the eyes. Growing up, we were told that the tears we shed when cutting onions are of great benefit to our eyes. These tears are said to cleanse the eyes thereby promoting better eyesight. At some point, I began the habit of slicing some onions just for the purpose of inducing those tears. Even though it might seem strange to some people I derive satisfaction from doing something beneficial to my body.

As someone who loves onion so much not just for the flavor it gives meals but for the array of health benefits it provides to the body, I find it hard to understand anyone bypassing them in their meals. Well, if not for the nutritional values you may as well consider the benefit to your sight. I'm pretty sure it doesn't only affect your eyes positively through cutting but through consumption as well.

Maybe you can take some time to educate someone around you that you notice picking around the onions on the many benefits it has to offer.
