A new restaurant called Mr.Bean recently opened inside KLCC Surai Mall. I decided to visit it after dinner. Based on the social media site, it seems to be well known for its Obanyaki.
When I visited the place, it had a Merdeka Promotion set that cost RM6.70. The Merdeka promotion set consists of 1 classic beancurd and 1 pancake with a choice of chocolate, custard, or cheese flavor. I ordered one set and chose the cheese flavour, the type of cheese they used is a white soft cheese type.
The Obanyaki are called Imagawayaki, it is a wagashi (Japanese dessert) often found at Japanese festivals as well as outside Japan, in countries such as Taiwan and South Korea. It is made of batter in a special pan, and filled with sweet azuki bean paste. However, it is also popular with other types of fillings such as vanilla custard, different fruit custards and preserves, curry, different meat and vegetable fillings, potato and mayonnaise. Imagawayaki are similar to dorayaki, but the latter are two separate pancakes sandwiched around the filling after cooking and are often served cold.
Obanyaki name came from a confectionery equipment manufacturer in 1960 in Matsuyama, and is currently the most widespread name outside of the Kantō region.
