If there's one thing I hate and try as much as possible to avoid, that'll be wasting food. I'm a big fan of food; I love it and enjoy consuming it when needed, as it plays a huge role in keeping me alive and healthy, and I tried as much as possible to respect it and not waste it, especially because I know there are people out there who've nothing to eat, and being someone who has had experience of what it feels like to lack food, for that reason I do my best not to waste any food, and below I'll share how I do that.
There's a saying that you don't know the value of a thing until you lose it; the same can be twisted to mean you get to understand the value of something when you don't have it. Being someone who on several occasions had to go hungry and have nothing to quench the hunger, I've come to know what it feels like to lack and the importance of food to the body, and so with that experience and mindset, now that I'm okay to a substantial level, I don't let what I've got to my head to the point of wasting food.
And one way I achieve this is mainly by only preparing what I can consume, not cooking, buying, or serving food in excess to the point where I won't be able to finish it and then throw it away because I no longer need it, so knowing my limits and the quantity I can consume is one of my steps towards avoiding wasting food items, and this plays an important role in my daily life.
Being a vegan who also has a garden of my own, whenever I'm going to the garden to harvest vegetables or other crops I've got in it, it's always much more comfortable for me to only harvest what I need at the time and not harvest beyond what's needed, and when that's done, it also means I'll be preparing an exact quantity that'll satisfy me and anyone I'm preparing the food for at the time.
I've seen several people who, because they've planted in their garden, go on to decide to harvest beyond what they need and ended up not being able to finish it and throw the food away. That's disgusting for me. I mean, if you know the stress behind cultivating a garden, then I'm sure you won't want to waste any bit of your farm produce.
On the other hand, another way I preserve my food, such as vegetables, so as not to waste them is by putting the remaining ones inside the fridge to preserve and to be consumed some other time. The fridge is an instrumental device that has played a huge role in helping people preserve food items, and I for one use it regularly, especially when I cook huge food on the weekend that I know I'll be needing during the course of the week.
Putting them in the fridge helps me freeze and preserve the food, and by the time I need it, all I have to do is take them out of the fridge and warm the food items, or if it's those that don't need warming, I just let the ice fade off, and then I go on to consume them again, and this helps me not to waste any food at all, and I'm sure if you adopt any of my mechanisms, it'll come in handy for you as well.
