According to history, Empress Catherine II of Russia granted Prince Pyotr Urusov the administration of all theatrical performances in Moscow. From there, he and Michael Maddox founded the Bolshoi theatre, dance and opera company in 1976. After years of performing in a private establishment, they acquired the Petrovsky Theatre, where they remained until a fire destroyed the building. The Bolshoi Theatre, designed by architect Osip Ivanovich Bovet, was built in 1825 on the remains. With a luxurious interior and exterior decoration and a capacity of 2,300 seats, it opened on 18 January 1825 with a performance of the Catalan ballet by Ferran Sors, Cendrillon.
After remaining open for 228 seasons, the Bolshoi Theatre had to close its doors for several years to be remodelled. It reopened in March 2008 with a completely renovated appearance. Among the new features after the restoration is the replacement of the hammer and sickle (Soviet symbols) on the main balcony, which had been hanging for decades, with the two-headed eagle from the original Russian coat of arms.
