I have been in Spain since last year, and having already gone through my first December outside Venezuelan lands, I must say that the way they lived there is unique in the world. The food, the music, and the essence of our Christmas are unique.

La comida, la música, la esencia de nuestras navidades, es única.

I am quite sure that after the great migration of Venezuelans into the world, in several decades and centuries, Christmas in many countries of the world will have a great Venezuelan influence, since it is one of the most characteristic and strongest points of the culture of our country. Here in Spain Christmas is rather quiet, and there are certain local traditions to a lesser or greater extent similar to those of the rest of the world. Again, I don't want to sound nationalistic, but there is something in our Christmas that is more noticeable and adds more "flavor".
A lo largo de la historia, muchas costumbres de diferentes culturas del planeta se han ido mezclando. Estoy bastante seguro que tras la gran migración de venezolanos en el mundo, dentro de varias décadas y siglos las navidades de muchos países del mundo tendrán una gran influencia venezolana, ya que es uno de los puntos más característicos y fuertes de la cultura de nuestro país. Aquí en España las navidades son bastante tranquilas, y existen ciertas tradiciones locales en menor o mayor medida parecidas a las del resto del mundo. De nuevo, no quiero sonar nacionalista, pero hay algo en nuestras navidades que se hace notar más y agregar más "sabor".
Perhaps the food is the most characteristic of Venezuelan Christmas. The Hallaca is that dish that is not only a meal in itself, with a unique combination of meat, vegetables, raisins, and olives, but its preparation itself is a whole process that involves entire families, and each one distributes the tasks as if it were a mass production factory (literally). Not to mention the Pan de Jamón (Ham Bread), a marvel of Venezuelan food, which even provokes heated discussions among Venezuelans about whether or not to remove the raisins and olives inside. Not to mention the pernil (pork leg), chicken salad, ponche crema (eggnog), etc.

Ni hablar del Pan de Jamón, una maravilla de la comida venezolana, el cual inclusive suscita acaloradas discusiones entre venezolanos por la remoción o no al comer de las pasas y acetunas que lleva adentro. Ya ni mencionar el pernil, la ensalada de gallina, el poche crema, etc.

Perhaps not many know that this song is Venezuelan (which makes me right in what may happen decades and centuries from now). As well as this song, we have many other Christmas carols of the same style that may only be heard in Venezuela. There is a Christmas music genre in Venezuela, that is, certain music that becomes fashionable in December and not the rest of the year. I don't know if something like this happens in any other country in the world. This genre is called "Gaita", and it comes from a specific region of the country (Zulia). Here I must admit that maybe this music seems a little "noisy" to other cultures of the world. However, there is already a Japanese gaita group.

Para mi sorpresa, aquí en Tenerife he notado en las navidades que una buena cantidad de personas, adultos y niños, cantan la canción "Burrito Sabanero". Quizás no muchos sepan que dicha canción es venezolana (lo cual me da la razón en lo que puede suceder dentro de varias décadas y siglos). Así como dicha canción, tenemos muchas otros villancicos del mismo estilo que quizás sólo se escuchan en Venezuela. Existe un género musical navideño en Venezuela, es decir, cierta música que se pone de moda en diciembre y no el resto del año. No sé si algo así sucede en otro país del mundo. A este género de le llama "Gaita", y proviene de una región específica del país (Zulia). Aquí debo reconocer que quizás dicha música le paresca un poco "ruidosa" a otras culturas del mundo. Sin embargo, ya existe un grupo japonés de gaita.
How was my Christmas? As you can see in the pictures I had the opportunity to enjoy some typical Christmas dishes such as hallaca and pan de jamón. The Christmas tree together with the presents is typical in most of the world, as well as what in Venezuela we call the "Nativity" and I think here in Spain it is called Bethlehem. I am not a person who likes alcoholic beverages very much, so I really enjoyed the food more than anything else. I really missed celebrating Christmas with so many Christmas decorations around me, at home and in the streets, something that in the last 5-10 years was practically not done in Venezuela. My favorite decoration: the train. Since I was a child I didn't have the opportunity to manipulate and assemble Christmas trains, something that as a Civil Engineer I like.
¿Cómo fueron mis navidades? Como pueden ver las imágenes tuve la oportunidad de disfrutar de algunos platos navideños típicos como la hallaca y el pan de jamón. El Árbol de Navidad junto a los regalos es típico en casi todo el mundo, así como lo que en Venezuela llamamos el "Nacimiento" y creo que aqui en España se le llama Belén. No soy una persona que le gusten mucho las bebidas alcohólicas, por lo que realmente disfruté más que nada de la comida. Realmente extrañaba un poco celebrar navidad con tanta decoración navideña a mi alrededor, en casa y en las calles, cosa que en los últimos 5-10 años practicamente no se hacía en Venezuela. Mi decoración favorita: el tren. Desde niño no tenía la oportunidad de manipular y armar trenes navideños, cosa que como Ingeniero Civil me gusta.
