BeerSaturday 419 - Helix NEIPA (Nouvelle France)

in BEER17 days ago

Here's my entry for the BeerSaturday 419 with yet another beer from the Nouvelle France brewery, purchased on my way back from camping in the village of Saint-Alexis-des-Monts in Quebec. For this Saturday, it's Helix NEIPA, the gluten-free beer range that put the brewery on the map.

Here is the map of Quebec where I can show you precisely the location of the brewery. The brewery Nouvelle France is located in Saint-Alexis-des-Monts, a municipality in Quebec's Mauricie region, at one of the entrances to the Réserve Faunique de Mastigouche.

📜 Brewery / Brasserie :

As this is the third post in a row about this brewery, not much is new. Just as a reminder, Nouvelle France was founded by brothers Marc and Martin Lessard in 1998 on their return from a trip to Belgium. The two brothers decided to brew a glutten-free beer, Messagère, the first of its kind in North America. For several years now, the brewery has controlled the production of its beers from A to Z, with organic production of their own malt and the various grains used.

This NEIPA is a 5.1% alcohol beer in the Helix Gluten Free range from the brewery Nouvelle France. This beer has received several awards over the years, including two runner-up finishes at the World Beer Award in 2019 and 2022. Helix NEIPA is hopped with Citra, Mosaic and Amarillo.
In the glass, the pale yellow color is quite cloudy, as this brewery's beers are generally unfiltered, and normal for a NEIPA. It's quite effervescent, and the foam disappears quickly, as you can see from the photos. On the palate, the tropical fruit aromas were present, but something was missing. Perhaps the gluten-free, rice and shorgo should provide a thinner body than a malted barley. Anyway, I don't know, it was missing a little something. But for a hot summer day in Montreal, it did the trick 😀.

😀.

Design

In terms of design, Nouvelle France sets its Helix beers apart with a more “futuristic” design and an infinity sign for a logo. I find the whole thing rather successful, better than the more traditional design of their regular beers.

The combination of no barley/wheat malt and the low ABV make this not my ideal beer but still looks good. It must be such a challenge to create a gluten free session ale and have it taste anywhere as good as the original. A wonderful gift for those who are gluten intolerant I bet and it almost inspires me to sugget we try and brew one of our own!

I don't know the complexities of brewing gluten-free beer. I felt that something was missing, a little more body, but the end result was quality with a nice balance between fruitiness and bitterness.

Thanks for your support... Have a great week

I like the can design. The helix is usually curved but the stylized version they use is crisp and modern. I like when the can color matches the beer. Like a quick reference on the shelf.

Yep, it's perfect when the color of the container indicates the content, no mistakes possible.
Have a great Monday
