Here's my contribution to BeerSaturday 439 with a new Altbier brewed by Herman, the Alt-B. During the previous #BeerSaturday, I (re)discovered this style of beer and enjoyed it; it was refreshing and complex too : see BeerSaturday 438 - Altstadt (Sir John & Herman). Voici ma participation au BeerSaturday 439 avec une nouvelle Altbier brassée par Herman, la Alt-B. Lors du précédent #BeerSaturday, j'avais (re)découvert ce type de bière et appréciée, rafraichissante et complexe (voir BeerSaturday 438 - Altstadt (Sir John & Herman)). Je voulais essayer une autre bière de ce type pour découvrir d'autres recettes brassicoles. Sera-t-elle meilleure que celle de la semaine dernière ? A découvrir dans ce post.
Here is the map of Quebec where I can show you precisely the location of the brewery. Herman is located in Prévost, at 955 chemin du Lac-Echo on the edge of the Petit Train du Nord, a 234 km bike path in the Laurentians. A bit of cycling and a good beer to cool down 😀

Herman is a craft brewery launched in December 2022 in the Laurentians by four friends: Frédéric Pelletier, John Marcel Tremblay, Louis Morin, and Louis-Philippe Beaudoin Morin. It focuses on thirst-quenching, light, and approachable beers. This very young brewery is ideally located in the heart of the Laurentians. After a day of hiking in the summer or skiing in the winter, this beer is just what I need. And I also appreciate that the brewery offers small cans; sometimes that's all I need.
Herman est une brasserie artisanale lancée en décembre 2022 dans les Laurentides par quatre amis Frédéric Pelletier, John Marcel Tremblay, Louis Morin et Louis-Philippe Beaudoin Morin. Elle se concentre sur les bières de soif, légères et accessibles. C'est une toute jeune brasserie idéalement placée au coeur des Laurentides. Après une journée de marche en été ou de ski en hiver, cette bière fait du bien. Et j'aime aussi le fait que la brasserie propose des canettes de petit format, parfois cela me suffit.
🍺 Tasting / Dégustation :
The Alt-B is an Altbier with 4.7% ABV, hopped only with Hallertau Mittelfrüh, a German classic. In the glass, it has a beautiful, almost transparent amber color topped with a light head. For this beer, Herman opted for a more minimalist and traditional approach than in their collaboration with Sir John, where Saphir hops were also present.
On the palate, this Altbier has a fairly mild, slightly sweet cereal taste, easy to drink, perhaps lacking in character, with less bitterness. It wasn't bad, refreshing, but perhaps better suited to summer than to facing the snow that falls here in Montreal. I preferred the Altstadt, but perhaps after a hot summer day, this one would be perfect.
*La Alt-B est une Altbier avec 4.7% d'alcool houblonnée seulement avec Hallertau Mittelfrüh, un classique allemand. Dans le verre, on a une belle robe ambrée presque transparente surmontée d'une légère mousse. Pour cette bière, Herman a opté pour une approche plus minimaliste et traditionnelle que lors de leur collaboration avec Sir John où le houblon Saphir était aussi présent.
En bouche, cette Altbier a un goût assez doux de céréale légèrement sucré, facile à boire peut-être avec un manque de caractère, avec moins d'amertume. Elle n'était pas mauvaise, rafraichissante mais peut-être plus en été que pour affronter la neige qui tombe ici à Montreal. J'ai préféré la Altstadt mais peut-être qu'après une chaude journée d'été celle-la serait parfaite.*
Design
Herman's design is always appealing and quite stylish. I like the mix of typography with the geometric elements. The overall effect is harmonious. The back of the can remains very simple, displaying only the essential information about the beer.
Le design de Herman est toujours sympathique assez stylé. J'aime bien ce mélange de typographie avec ces éléments géométriques. L'ensemble est harmonieux. Le dos de la canette reste très simple avec les informations essentielles sur la bière.
