Incubation (World Building Notes)

There was a prompt written in the World Building Community, asking us to set a scene around the idea of eggs.

Here's A Link To The Prompt If You'd To Check It Out.

The room was dim, apart from a small shimmer of light coming from the lamps. Cold, apart from the warmth resonating from the incubated.

Doctor Gamani was too busy writing notes to notice the others in the room going about their work. Occasionally some quiet chatter or footsteps would momentarily interrupt her concentration, but it wasn't long before she was back to her research.

The hours went by quickly, but anticipation for their creation to hatch seemed to slow things down a bit. Keeping busy was the only way to pass the time.

She looked over to her assistant, who wasn't at his station. Scanning through the room, Dr.Gamani saw him, Avis Bocsh - a young Alid - staring at the eggs.

"They won't hatch because you're staring at them." Dr. Gamani said as she drew closer to him.

"My father won't be happy if the twins don't survive." He said, without taking his eyes off the eggs. "Months and months of waiting, and no results." Avis sighed.

"These things take time," was all Dr. Gamani could say.

The thought of having the plug pulled on the facility was worrying, but she was hopeful that at least one of them would make it out of their shells.

A few more hours went by without incident. Pointless pawing over past failures led to no new information. They had no choice but to see if this time they had succeeded, and if they didn't, there may not be a next time.

"The twins! They're moving." Avis erupted but soon quietened down his enthusiasm.

"Stay calm." Dr. Gamani said as she moved to monitor them.

"I'll message Father, he'll be excited to hear the news," Avis said, as he charged back to his desk.

Gamani barely took notice of his words, until it was too late. "No, don't send word yet. We need time."

The Alid shook his head and shrugged. "Too late."

You idiot. She thought while trying to turn her mind from her assistant. His father was the last person she wanted in the delivery room. A delicate time called for delicate minds after all.

"My weapons are ready I hear!" Big Bocsh said as he strode into the room. His voice was apparent before the doors could be heard opening.

One of the eggs was shuddering, while the other lay still. The room was warmer now, and the unit was looking very overcrowded. Especially due to the pointless bodies who tended to flock around Big Bocsh.

"We don't know if today is the day or tomorrow. It could be nothing more than movement." Dr. Gamani said, trying to keep her mind off the others in the room.

One of the alarms started to sound, showing that the life signs of one of the eggs were dropping.

"What's that?" Big Bocsh asked. "That better not be a bad sign! My investments better be okay!"

"One of the eggs has passed. It didn't work." Dr. Gamani said.

"Well get it back! Do something! If this fails, everything is gone. Your jobs, my life's work! Everything!" Big Bocsh shouted erratically.

"I'll help, father!" Avis shouted while knocking the lid off the incubator and holding the last egg.

"Wait! Don't handle it!" Dr. Gamani shouted, but it was drowned out by screaming from Avis. There was no making sense of his words, but judging from the empty shell left in the unit, it was clear that one of the creatures made it.

Avis scrambled around the room, holding his arm, and moving his hand to his shoulder, then his chest. It was as if he was trying to scratch a persistent itch.

"Do something! What's happening!?" Big Bocsh shouted.

The door shut abruptly, catching the attention of everyone inside.

"We must contain this creature. We can't risk whatever it is to spread throughout the station." Dr. Gamani said, to the stun of everyone in the room. "There are too many experiments active aboard to risk jeopardizing them."

This is a fantastic scene! I love that it's an experimental weapon that they've just let loose. I've seen enough horror movies and sci-fi to know that the chances of them actually containing this are slim, and that's super fun lol.

Hahaha, I was having a lot of fun writing this one. I think I'd like to explore this a bit more, and do a bit of an Alien kind of story with it. It would also be cool to explore a bit more of the ship/ space station its set on.
