This is Kulleet Bay:
We stopped here, about 15 nm mile away from Maple bay, where our captain will be leaving, its a nice anchorage that provides good protection from the wind.
Kulleet bay:
Kulleet Bay, located on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada, is a small, picturesque bay with a rich natural and cultural history. The bay is part of the traditional territory of the Coast Salish peoples, particularly the Cowichan Tribes, who have lived in the region for thousands of years. For these Indigenous communities, Kulleet Bay and the surrounding areas were vital for fishing, hunting, and gathering resources, playing a central role in their way of life.
Historically, Kulleet Bay was known for its abundant marine life, including salmon, shellfish, and other seafood, which sustained local Indigenous populations. The bay’s name itself is derived from the Hul’q’umi’num language, spoken by the Coast Salish people, reflecting its deep cultural significance.
In more recent history, European settlers arrived in the area during the 19th century, bringing changes to the landscape and economy. While the bay remains relatively undeveloped compared to other parts of Vancouver Island, it has become a quiet retreat for locals and visitors who appreciate its natural beauty. The bay is surrounded by lush forests and offers stunning views of the Strait of Georgia, making it a popular spot for kayaking, birdwatching, and exploring the shoreline.
Today, Kulleet Bay is a reminder of the region’s Indigenous heritage and the importance of preserving natural ecosystems. Efforts to protect the bay’s environment and honor its cultural history continue, ensuring that it remains a cherished part of Vancouver Island’s landscape.
