Megadeth - I Don't Care
Megadeth, the elders of American (and global) thrash metal, released their 17th album, Megadeth, a month ago, and announced that it would be their last. Whether or not the album is their last remains to be seen and heard. The sound on the album is, of course, high-quality metal, offering fans everything we have come to expect. Sharp guitar riffs, explosive solos, heavy tank drums, and, of course, vocals that leave no doubt as to what we are listening to.
The song 'I Don't Care' leans towards punk influences, fast, aggressive, and direct, with a repetitive mantra and chorus- 'I don't care.'
Lana Del Rey - White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter
Lana Del Rey had already announced her tenth studio album for 2024, but apparently, everything has been delayed, and it will now be released in May or June this year under the name Stove.
The song 'White Feather Hawk Tail Deer Hunter' is the third single, released three days ago. It is a minimalist ballad with classic arrangements and whispering vocals, an intimate, probably autobiographical story about happiness with a loved one. Incidentally, this song reminds me a lot of Kate Bush.
Karma Sheen - Ishq Kalma
Karma Sheen is a new name to me, but they are an international band based in London. So far, they have released a few singles and their debut album of the same name.
They play a mix of Hindustani classical music, retro psych rock, and Sufi lyrics. Very unique, 'raag and roll' vibe, full of psychedelia, improvisation, and spirituality.
For the song Ishq Kalma, I chose a KEXP recording from the Trans Musicales festival last December, which was released a few days ago. I think it's important to highlight live performances, especially in this era of increasingly polished AI music, so that I can see and hear humans.
KORMORANA - Pepel in Krik
Kormorana is a Slovenian band that has been active since 2017. They have released two albums so far, the latest one, Leto, at the end of January. They play alternative heavy rock with psychedelic and stoner elements. They call it 'Heavy Flying Rock'.
The song 'Pepel in Krik', or 'Ashes and Screams' in English, is the opening track of the new album, powerful and dark, and speaks of war and loss. Raw, authentic, and hypnotic.
LƤjƤ ĆijƤlƤ & Albert Witchfinder - Novichok
LƤjƤ ĆijƤlƤ and Albert Witchfinder come from Finland, have been creating music since 2021, and have released three studio albums to date, the latest being Circle of Pain, which came out last month. A new band for me.
Together, they create a mixture of experimental, industrial/power electronics music with elements of noise, avant-garde, and dark ambient. Cold, minimalist electronic bursts and mantras, screams and lyrics about human misery and social abhorrence. Provocative and non-commercial, not for every ear.
The song Novichok is from their latest album, the title probably alluding to the Russian nerve agent, a symbol of modern threats, terror and war.
Youth Avoiders - Endless Fight
Youth Avoiders is a French band from the Paris suburbs that has been playing for over 16 years. During that time, they have released three albums, the latest of which, Defiance, came out at the end of January. Their music is a blend of melodic hardcore punk and post-punk melancholy, punctuated by bursts of anger and despair.
The song Endless Fight opens the latest album, with powerful guitars balancing intensity and melancholy, and vocals conveying a message of endless struggle against the system and lies.
Cocanha, Tarta Relena, Los Sara Fontan - La lan deus motons
This is not a classic band, but a collective project of three duos from southern Europe (France, Spain, Portugal), and the result of a collaborative creative process culminating in the release of an album at the end of January. It's an avant-garde, experimental vocal project dedicated to the memory of the women textile workers at the former Fabra i Coats factory in Barcelona. The album title, 4132314, refers to the numerical weaving pattern/textile code from the factory.
The music is polyphonic, rhythmic, and sometimes hypnotic. Vocals are the basis (singing, shouting, choral ecstasy), but the weaving patterns are translated into melodies, rhythms, and compositional games. Almost acapella style. A document of class struggle and female solidarity.
The song 'La lan deus motons', which means 'sheep's wool' in English, is sung by all six voices, with rhythmic patterns that mimic weaving machines, a minimalist instrumental background, and hypnotic loops.
East Duo - Nisli & Ushguli
Finally, some cinematic chill-out vibes.
East Duo is a trio from Tbilisi, Georgia, who have been playing together since 2021. They don't have an album yet, but they have released eight singles, some of which have reached millions of plays. I heard them for the first time recently. Georgian folk music with ambient, slightly electronic, and post-rock elements.
Here are two songs, Nisli and Ushuli. The video was shot at an altitude of 3,000 meters, with the Georgian mountains in the background.
š¶ That should be all for today, thanks for your attention, and enjoy your weekend with new songs!
