More than any other art form, music has the power to make us feel good. There are guitar riffs that will give you chills, crescendos that will make you faint, and arias that will make your hair stand on end.
And “Good Feeling” is the ultimate feel-good song. Soaring and leaping, it evokes the joy of nature and the freedom of a bird in flight. Does it move.
"I feel good" is written to express a specific feeling of happiness. That is, it comes with freedom from oppression. British composers Anthony Newley and Lesley Bricuss wrote music for the musical The Roar of the Greasepaint, the Smell of the Crowd. The show toured British provincial theaters in 1964 and then premiered on Broadway in 1965 (where a young Elaine Page made her professional debut as a chorus girl).
Roar is a fun, allegorical musical about power, class and race. Two characters, Sir and Cocky, play an endless Beckettian game that ends in favor of the superior and superior Sir, but also features "The Black One" (changed to "The Stranger" or "The Black Man" in later productions). Shake things up. When Sir and Cocky argue and are subjected to racist taunts, Black wins the game and celebrates his victory by singing "Feels Good".
The original Broadway arrangement of "Good Feeling" by Brits Cy Grant and Gilbert Price didn't sound like a song that would set the world on fire. There was barely a pulse and the children's choir seemed too sweet. Strong vocal performances from Grant and Price gave the song some power.
