Acupuncture: An Ancient Chinese Medical Tradition.

in StemSocial11 months ago

An ancient practice of traditional Chinese medicine is known as Acupuncture, the practitioners of this medicine believe that the human body has over 2,000 points of acupuncture connected through pathways or meridians. These pathways create an energy flow through the body which is responsible for overall health.

Acupuncture involves the penetration of skin with a thin, metallic d solid needle, activated through a gentle and specific movement of the practitioner's hands or an electrical stimulation.
Each practitioner has their unique style, to determine the type of treatment that will be helpful to your skin type and personality, certain questions will be asked in regards to; the parts of the body that are painful, the color of the face, the strength, rhythm, and quality of the pulse in your wrist.

The overall procedure of acupuncture takes 60 minutes, although some appointments may be shorter than that. The inserted needle is done to the point where there is a production of sensation of ache or pressure. During treatment, the needles may be heated or a mild electric current may be applied to them. While some people report that, they feel relaxed after a session of acupuncture, some others report that they feel relaxed.

During the session, the patient will be asked to sit or lie down, and some parts of the patient's clothes will need to be removed for certain body parts to be accessed easily. A dull ache may be felt when needles are inserted, but no intense pain should be felt, if that happens let your practitioner know immediately.

Chinese people refer to the energy that flows through the body as qi, the practitioners believe that the disruptions of qi create an imbalance in the body's energy leading to illness. It is also believed that there are hundreds of acupuncture points in the body along 14 major meridians, also known as energy-carrying channels.

There are times when other forms of stimulation are used over acupuncture points; Friction, heat, pressure, suction, and impulses of electromagnetic energy. While some people will never be a party to acupuncture treatment, some other people believe that the points are aimed to stimulate the central nervous system, which in turn would release chemicals into the spinal cord, brain, and muscles.

Studies conducted by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), show acupuncture to be an effective treatment either it is done alone or in combination with other conventional therapies for the treatment of; addiction, headaches, and nausea, especially the ones caused by surgical anesthesia and cancer chemotherapy, dental pain after surgery, lower back pain, stroke rehabilitation, asthma, osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, myofascial pain, tennis elbow, asthma, and even menstrual cramps.

Usually, when acupuncture is done by an expert there shouldn't be an issue, it is safe but some mid-term side effects are also possible like; the feeling of sickness, drowsiness, pain at the point of puncture, sickness, dizziness, or faint, then bleeding or bruising where the needle punctures the skin.

However, some people can experience serious side effects like infection or a punctured lung, but it is very rare. If the patient has a bleeding disorder, like hemophilia, or is taking medications like anticoagulant medicine, it is best to speak with a practitioner before undergoing the acupuncture procedure.

Conclusion.

Even if there have been several testimonies to the fact that acupuncture works for some people, basic scientific studies have not been able to explain how acupuncture works within the framework of Western medicine.

To ensure that everything goes well, discuss your acupuncture plans with your doctor first, do not just rely on the diagnosis by your acupuncture practitioner. Also, consider the cost and insurance coverage for the entire procedure, and get a licensed practitioner to get it done.
