Greetings fellow pet lovers. A couple of days ago one of my hens had seven chicks, just as the title of the post indicates. In fact, it was on Sunday that the first 5 were born, then the other three were born. I invite you to join me in this brief story that I will tell you.

These chicks are from a young, first-time hen, that is, this is the first time this hen has had chicks. This black hen is identical to another hen that also had chicks recently and is older than this one, in fact she is her mother. This gives me to understand that this breed of black hens are good at hatching young and reproducing.

Saludos amigos amantes de las mascotas. Hace un par de días una de mis gallinas tuvo siete pollitos, tal como lo indica el título de la publicación. De hecho, fue el domingo que nacieron los primeros 5, luego nacieron los otros tres. Los invito a acompañarme a esta breve historia que les contaré.

Estos pollitos son de una gallina joven y primeriza, es decir, es la primera vez que esta gallina tiene pollitos. Esta gallina negra es idéntica a otra que también tuvo pollitos hace poco y que es mayor que esta, de hecho es su mamá. Esto me da a entender que esta raza de gallinas negras son buenas para empollar crías y reproducirse.

That morning I went into the henhouse being careful not to approach the rooster, as I was annoyed by the presence of another rooster that I have outside the henhouse. But I heard some chicks catching in the place where the hen was, so I understood that they had already hatched.

I approached the hen, carefully lifted the roof under which she is and lifted her too, so I could see the chicks and examine them, there were the first five.

Esa mañana entré al gallinero con cuidado de no acercarme al gallo, pues estaba molesto por la presencia de otro gallo que tengo fuera del gallinero. Pero escuché unos pollitos pillando en el lugar en donde estaba la gallina, así que entendí que ya habían nacido.

Me acerqué a la gallina, levanté con cuidado el techo bajo el que está y también la levanté a ella, para poder ver a los pollitos y examinarlos, ahí estaban los primeros cinco.

They were all very small, because the breeds of my hens are free range, small hens that lay eggs just as small, but very nutritious, hence the chicks were born with that size. To make a comparison, I leave some pictures of the size of the chicks next to my hands, so you have an idea of how small they are.

Eran todos muy pequeños, pues las razas de mis gallinas son de campo, gallinas pequeñas que ponen huevos igual de pequeños, pero muy nutritivos, de ahí que los pollitos hayan nacido con ese tamaño. Para que hagan una comparación, les dejo algunas fotografías del tamaño de los pollitos junto a mis manos, así tienen una idea de los pequeños que son.

Those are the ones that had already hatched that morning, but the hens usually stay in the coop for two to three days waiting for all the chicks to hatch, so I had to wait until all the chicks that were going to hatch during those days had finished hatching. At least that morning I found one egg that was already pecked, so it was very likely that another chick would hatch during the course of the day...

Esos son los que ya habían nacido esa mañana, pero las gallinas suelen quedarse de dos a tres días en el gallinero esperando que nazcan todos los pollitos, así que tocó esperar a que terminaran de nacer todos los que iban a nacer esos días. Por lo menos esa mañana me encontré un huevo que ya estaba picoteado, así que era muy probable que otro pollito naciera en el trascurso del día…

Then I left the chicks with their hen again, I walked away and she covered them again, to protect them from the cold, something that is deadly for these chicks during this stage of their first days.

Entonces volví a dejar a los pollitos con su gallina, me alejé y ella volvió a cubrirlos, para protegerlos del frío, algo que es mortal para estos pollitos durante esta etapa de sus primeros días.

The next morning I found to my surprise that the hen had already left the nest, she had taken her chicks along with the other hens, but to avoid danger I took them out of the big coop so she could be alone with her young.

I bought her a lot of finely ground feed, especially for chicks, so I served them and they all started to eat.

I hope they will soon be perky and keep up with their mother hen.

A la mañana siguiente me encontré con la sorpresa de que la gallina ya había abandonado el nido, se había llevado a sus pollitos junto con las otras gallinas, pero para evitarles peligro los saqué del gallinero grande para que estuviera sola con sus crías.

Le compré un montón de alimento bien molido, especial para pollitos, así que les serví y todos comenzaron a comer.

Espero que pronto estén animados y le sigan el ritmo a su mamá gallina.
