Spicy Hai Phong Fish Noodle Soup – “fish noodle war” in Soc Son town

in #food3 days ago (edited)

If you stand near the center of Soc Son town, you will see three fish noodle soup shops within a few steps.😳😳😳 The three shops are located next to each other, each with its own style. I am someone who likes to eat and write down my feelings on blog😎, so I have tried all 3 shops. The other two shops I wrote about before, you can read them here,

My satisfying experience at pineapple fish noodle shop

each has its own plus point, something unique that makes people remember. But today, I want to talk about the third shop the one with a striking yellow tone and a straightforward name: “Spicy Hai Phong Fish Noodle Soup.”

My first impression – not the food, the cleanliness. The space of this shop is very different from the other two nearby. The “Spicy Hai Phong Fish Noodle Soup” shop is like stepping into a family restaurant mini style. The main color tone is warm yellow, gentle lights, brown wooden tables and chairs, cleaned shiny, arranged neatly. From the tablecloth, chopsticks box to the wall and floor – I couldn’t find any point to complain about in terms of tidiness and neatness.

Because I went here with a friend, I ordered:
– 2 bowls of spicy Hai Phong fish noodle soup
– 1 bowl of quail eggs with mugwort

Actually I wanted to try the eel noodles too, but that day the shop ran out of eel noodles, I felt very regretful but also had a reason to come back next time.

The bowl of fish noodle soup was not too big, but full. I’m not from Hai Phong so I don’t dare compare if it’s “authentic Hai Phong style” or not, but if you call this “Soc Son town version spicy fish noodle soup” then this version is quite decent.

The fish was fried crispy, outside was golden brown crust, inside still kept the softness and sweet aroma of the fish meat. Fish soaked in sweet broth made it very interesting when eaten.

Vegetables were just blanched to cooked, eaten crunchy and cool. Add a bit of dill, very aromatic. The noodles are medium-small strands, when pouring in broth still kept slight chewiness. The broth is delicious, naturally sweet, slightly spicy, and moderately sour. I guess it’s got well-stewed tomatoes, maybe a bit of Hai Phong shrimp paste or something, because its taste is different and quite unique compared to other shops I’ve eaten around here.

Quail eggs with mugwort – a side dish but addictive

I don’t usually eat quail eggs, but seeing the menu had quail eggs with mugwort, I tried a bowl with 1 egg and honestly, just one egg – 8,000 VND – was enough to fill you up. Quite cheap compared to its taste. Mugwort is not bitter, but aromatic and slightly sweet afterward, the seller quickly blanched it in hot broth. After eating this bowl, I felt light in the stomach, warm in the body, very suitable to eat with fish noodle soup or even eat alone is enough.

The shop is most crowded around 7–8 AM, if you don’t want to wait, go earlier or a bit later. When I went, eel noodles were sold out early, so if you’re a fan of eel, ask before ordering. The shop also sells takeout, packing is very careful no spilling or mixing of soup, very suitable if you want to bring it back to the office.
– Price is reasonable: 30k–35k/bowl depending on topping, quail eggs are 8k–16k/bowl (depending on quantity). Calculated, full stomach under 60,000 VND, worth every penny🙂‍↕️

Next time I will come early to try the eel noodles – to see if that dish surprises me like today’s fish noodle and quail eggs did.😎
