It has been raining so often lately that a night with good weather already feels like a small gift. Instead of staying at home and wasting the opportunity, I decided to take my bicycle out for a late-night ride. Sometimes, the best way to appreciate pleasant weather is simply to go outdoors, regardless of the time.

For me, night cycling can be just as enjoyable as cycling during the day. Of course, daytime rides are still the best when I want to admire the greenery and beautiful views around Singapore’s nature parks. However, night cycling offers a completely different experience. The glowing city lights, quieter roads, and cool breeze create a relaxing atmosphere that makes the journey feel calm and peaceful.

It is the kind of weekend activity that helps me clear my mind after spending so many weekdays sitting in front of a laptop. There is no need to rush anywhere. I can simply pedal at my own pace, enjoy the cold air, and see where the road takes me.

Another great thing about night cycling is the eating part, of course! After cycling for a long distance, my appetite becomes much stronger. Somehow, I also feel less guilty about ordering a generous meal because I already exercised before eating. That sounds fair, right? LOL.

For my late-night supper, I stopped at 888 Eating House and visited a Teochew Noodle stall. The stall had many tempting dishes displayed on its brightly lit menu, but the Signature Noodle immediately caught my attention. It was priced at only SGD 5.80, which seemed very reasonable considering the number of ingredients included.

I chose Mee Pok for my noodles because I really enjoy its broad and slightly chewy texture. It is especially satisfying when the flat strands are coated with sauce and can be picked up easily with chopsticks. The noodles were springy, flavorful, and had enough sauce at the bottom to keep every mouthful moist without becoming overly wet.

The Signature Noodle really lived up to its name because it included almost everything I could ask for in a Teochew noodle meal. There were fish balls, fish cake, meatballs, liver slices, pork slices, minced pork, egg, goji berries, and even a dumpling. It felt like I was discovering another ingredient each time I dipped my spoon into the soup.

The soup was comforting and savory, with egg ribbons floating throughout the broth. The pork slices were tender, while the meatball had a satisfying meaty bite. I also enjoyed the dumpling because its soft wrapper held a flavorful filling inside. The fish ball was slightly salty for my preference, but it worked better when eaten together with the noodles and soup. The broth helped balance the saltiness, making the overall combination enjoyable.

What impressed me most was the generous serving. For SGD 5.80, the bowl offered plenty of ingredients that could easily cost much more at a food court in the city centre. This is one reason I enjoy cycling into neighbourhood areas. The surroundings are calmer, the atmosphere feels more relaxed, and it is still possible to find hearty hawker meals at affordable prices.

Overall, my night cycling trip turned into a satisfying little food adventure. The cool ride gave me the perfect appetite, while the Signature Noodle provided the warm and filling supper I needed. Good weather, peaceful cycling, and a delicious bowl of noodles—sometimes, a simple weekend night like this is already the perfect treat.
Bon appetit!
