You know what’s the best part after shopping? …eating. 😂
Yeah, shopping is fun and all, but after walking through one store, then another store, then somehow another store again (why do malls feel endless?), my appetite always hits maximum level. Like, the kind of hunger where you start daydreaming about food while still holding shopping bags.
So after that long “mall cardio,” I had one clear craving: Japanese food. Not the fancy kind that needs a reservation and a dress code, just something comforting, warm, and satisfying. That’s when I remembered Sukiya, my reliable place for a good Gyudon fix.

I went for the Gyudon set with sautéed vegetables, and honestly… this is exactly the kind of meal that feels like a reward. Gyudon is simple on paper, beef and onions over rice, but when it’s done right, it’s the kind of simple that feels complete. The bowl came out looking generous, with the beef piled nicely on top, onions tucked in between, and that glossy sauce soaking into everything like it’s trying to make sure every bite is flavorful.

The first bite reminded me why I keep coming back to gyudon in general. The sauce has that familiar savory + sweet balance, kind of like teriyaki vibes, but not in an overpowering way. It’s sweet enough to be comforting, but still savory enough that you don’t feel like you’re eating something sugary. The onions add that soft, almost melt-in-your-mouth texture, and together with the beef, it’s just… satisfying. It’s the kind of bowl that doesn’t need drama. It just works.

And because this set comes with a choice of drink, I picked iced green tea, specifically unsweetened. This was a very intentional choice. 😂
Gyudon already carries that light sweetness, so I didn’t want to stack sweetness on top of sweetness. I wanted something clean and refreshing to balance the richness of the beef and sauce. The unsweetened green tea was perfect: crisp, cooling, and it reset my palate between bites. Sometimes the best “pairing” isn’t about matching flavors, it’s about keeping things balanced so the main dish stays the star.
Now let’s talk about the surprise hero of this meal: the sautéed vegetables.

Who would’ve thought that something that sounds like “boring vegetables” could be so addictive? I genuinely enjoyed this side dish more than I expected. The greens had a nice crunch (not sad and soggy), and the flavor was way better than I imagined. There were plenty of garlic bits, which instantly made it more exciting for me because garlic = happiness. The seasoning wasn’t too heavy, but it was enough to make the veggies feel like a dish on their own, not just something you eat out of obligation.

I also like the overall vibe of Sukiya. The ambience is simple but comfortable, the service style is straightforward, and it’s the kind of place where you can eat peacefully without feeling rushed. Most importantly… the price is really friendly. This whole set cost me SGD 6.80, and for how filling and satisfying it is, I’d say it’s totally worth it.

So yeah, after shopping, Sukiya gave me exactly what I needed: a warm bowl of comfort, crunchy garlicky veggies, and a refreshing drink to tie it all together.
And yes... I’ll be back soon for another gyudon meal. 😌🍚
