TGIF Comfort Bowl + A Soothing Nightcap (Prawn Noodles & Chamomile Tea)

in #food18 hours ago

Last night felt like one of those proper TGIF evenings—where you tell yourself you deserve something hearty, then immediately remember your stomach also deserves kindness. 😂 So I went for a heavier dinner first, and then I followed it up with a warm, calming tea when I got home. Honestly? That combo worked out perfectly.

For dinner, I visited a prawn noodles spot around Geylang Bahru—the kind of place that quietly does what it does best: big flavors, generous toppings, and that satisfying “hawker comfort” vibe. I went straight for my usual favorite: the prawn + pork ribs combo. It’s a solid order because you get the sweetness of prawns and the deeper, meatier richness from the ribs, so the whole bowl feels complete even before the soup enters the chat.

But here’s the twist: instead of the popular yellow egg noodles, I asked for kway teow.

Normally I stick to yellow noodles because… well, everyone does. If you sit there for a few minutes, you’ll notice most diners slurping the same golden strands, and there’s a reason it’s a crowd favorite. But last night I wanted a different noodle experience—something that feels more indulgent and more “wide noodle = more satisfaction” (this is real logic, ok).

And kway teow delivered.

The wide, silky sheets have that interesting texture where they’re soft but not mushy, and the best part is how they absorb sauce. Every bite felt coated, like the noodles were holding onto the flavor on purpose. If yellow noodles are lively and springy, kway teow is more like… comforting and luxurious. Each slurp feels heavier—in a good way—especially when it’s paired with prawns and ribs.

Also, I added paprika for extra spice. Not the kind of spicy that punches you in the face, but the kind that gently warms the background and makes the whole bowl feel more exciting. It gave the dish a slightly smoky edge, and suddenly the familiar combo tasted a bit new again.

One thing I noticed though: the portion of noodles felt more than usual, even though I ordered a small. Maybe it was just the way the kway teow piled up, or maybe the stall auntie decided I needed more carbs for TGIF energy. Either way, I ended up eating more than I expected… and yes, I was very full after.

So when I got home, I made myself a mug of Dilmah chamomile tea—one of my favorite brands—then I “upgraded” it with a few add-ons: dried red dates and wolfberries (goji berries). I didn’t add any sugar or honey, because I wanted the natural sweetness from the ingredients to do the work.

And it did.

The red date has this gentle caramel-like sweetness, warm and round. The wolfberries add a subtle fruity tang—slightly sweet, slightly bright—so the tea doesn’t feel flat. Together, they made the chamomile feel even more soothing, like a little bedtime ritual that also helps with digestion after a heavy meal.

Overall, I love how last night turned into a “balance” kind of food story: a bold, filling bowl of prawn noodles to celebrate the week… then a calming tea to soften the landing. I’m definitely repeating this combo again—maybe not every TGIF (my stomach will complain), but whenever I feel like treating myself properly. Cheers 🍵🦐

I so much love prawns 🦐🍤🦐,they provide several essential minerals.

They stand out for their high content of selenium, zinc, phosphorus, and iodine, which support various health functions like immune response and thyroid health.

Cheers!!! to you Pal.

Totally agree… prawns are delicious and nutritious. Cheers! 🦐

Interesting bowl of noodles where the soup is separated. I usually take bee hoon and yellow noodle mix. All yellow noodle abit too alkaliny for me
