Opíparo, Guatemala City - Paying burgers with HBD [Eng][Esp]

Arriving in Guatemala City was equal parts exciting and exhausting. But luckily @buttcoins and @starkerz shared with me the idea that a good dinner would make up for the rest of the night.

Of course, we were so immersed in conversations about Hive and the power of its stable coin, that it would have been impossible not to opt for a business that accepted lightning payments, to prove to ourselves that it was possible to improve that system and carry out our project.

Llegar a ciudad de Guatemala fue, en partes iguales, emocionante y agotador. Pero por suerte @buttcoins y @starkerz compartían conmigo la idea de que una buena cena nos compensaría lo que nos quedaba de noche.

Por supuesto, estábamos tan inmersos en conversaciones sobre Hive y el poder de su stable coin, que hubiese sido imposible no optar por algún comercio que aceptara pagos en lightning, para demostrarnos a nosotros mismos que era posible mejorar ese sistema y llevar a cabo nuestro proyecto.

Our personal guide, @buttcoins, chose the best location in the city so we could immediately appreciate the crypto acceptance that exists in Guatemala. We stayed in Zone 4 of Guatemala City, known as Barrio Bitcoin.

Mr @starkerz was very excited because he remembered his last visit to the city, a year ago if I'm not mistaken, during which he was able to visit some businesses that offered this payment method, making it much easier for him to control expenses during his stay.

It was a short but interesting journey we made from our Airbnb to the heart of Barrio Bitcoin, strolling through steep streets, alleys full of street art and commercial premises decorated with all the possible lighting so as not to go unnoticed to the eyes of the diner and that, in addition, contrast in a funny way with the jumble that characterizes the electrical wiring around these places. I always notice that, it is impossible for me not to be curious and remember the places in which I have seen, so many times, that neglect for the visual noise. It has become, in a strange way, attractive to me.

Nuestro guía personal, @buttcoins, eligió el mejor emplazamiento en la ciudad para que pudiéramos apreciar, de inmediato, la acogida crypto que existe en Guatemala. Nos alojamos en la Zona 4 de Ciudad de Guatemala, conocida como Barrio Bitcoin.

Mr @starkerz estaba muy entusiasmado porque recordaba su última visita a la ciudad, un año atrás si no me equivoco, durante la cual pudo conocer algunos comercios que ofrecían ese método de pago, facilitándole mucho el control de gastos durante su estancia.

Fue un corto pero interesante recorrido el que hicimos desde nuestro Airbnb hasta el corazón de Barrio Bitcoin, paseando por calles empinadas, callejones llenos de street art y locales comerciales decorados con toda la iluminación posible para no pasar desapercibido a los ojos del comensal y que, además, contrastan de forma divertida con el revoltijo que caracteriza al cableado eléctrico por estos lugares. Siempre me fijo en eso, me es imposible no sentir curiosidad y recordar los lugares en que he visto, tantas veces, esa dejadez por el ruido visual. Se ha convertido, de una extraña manera, en algo atractivo para mí.

Walking through the neighborhood we came across an interesting sculpture called Innovation Muse, the work of a local artist, according to the sign that rests at its base, which is very much in keeping with the technological environment surrounding it and has a lighting that invites you to contemplate it for a long time during the evenings.

We also found ourselves enjoying a pleasant and quiet bohemian atmosphere, which invites you to feel at ease and safe walking through the streets, not crowded but resounding with the continuous celebration of people in the terraces and clubs.

That atmosphere distracted us for a while despite the hunger we had, we started to dig into the @thedistriator map, trying to discover some of the places where lightning transactions had been done before, but we had no mobile data and it was more difficult than expected, to find a place.

Caminando por el barrio nos conseguimos con una interesante escultura llamada Musa de la innovación, obra de un artista local, según el cartel que descansa a sus pies, que está muy acorde al entorno tecnológico y que cuenta con una iluminación que te invita a contemplarla por largo rato durante las noches.

También nos encontramos disfrutando de un ameno y tranquilo ambiente bohemio, que te invita a sentirte a gusto y seguro caminando por las calles, que no están aglomeradas pero resuenan con la celebración continua de las personas en las terrazas y los clubes.

Ese ambiente nos distrajo durante un rato a pesar del hambre que teníamos, comenzamos a indagar en el mapa de @thedistriator, intentando descubrir alguno de los lugares en donde se hubiesen realizado transacciones con lightning antes, pero no teníamos datos móviles y resultó más difícil de lo esperado, dar con un lugar indicado.

After walking around the nice streets of the Barrio Bitcoin, and almost back to our starting point, we came across one of the shops that advertised accepting Bitcoin payments and that @starkerz had been to before.

As if that wasn't enough, we hadn't realized that we were standing in front of the Opíparo restaurant for several minutes, while checking the map trying to get it. Our faces of disbelief and the laughter that followed lasted for a while after recognizing how silly we were turning in the same place, not reading the huge, bright signs with the name of the place.

We entered the restaurant, nice atmosphere but no diners, closing time was approaching and the kitchen was kept busy with take-out orders. The first thing we did was to ask about paying with Bitcoin, the waitress's face was a poem, that unexpected thing took her by surprise.

She told us that normally they do, although the manager, who was in charge of it, was not there. We told her that we came especially for it and she promised us that she would try to arrange with the manager to find a way to please us.

I don't remember if what they needed was a confirmation or rather the explanation of how to make the payment, but the continuous attempts to call and the long conversations took a while.

Luego de dar varias vueltas entre las bonitas calles del Barrio Bitcoin, y casi regresando a nuestro punto de partida, dimos con uno de los locales comerciales que anunciaba aceptar pagos por Bitcoin y a los que @starkerz había ido antes.

Como si fuera poco, no nos habíamos dado cuenta de que estuvimos de pie delante del restaurante Opíparo varios minutos, mientras revisábamos el mapa intentando conseguirlo. Nuestras caras de incredulidad y las carcajadas que siguieron duraron un rato luego de reconocer lo tonto que fuimos girando en el mismo sitio, sin leer los enormes y brillantes letreros con el nombre del local.

Entramos al restaurante, ambiente agradable pero sin comensales, se acerca ya la hora de cerrar y la cocina se mantenía ocupada con los pedidos para llevar. Lo primero que hicimos fue preguntar sobre el pago con Bitcoin, la cara de la mesera fue un poema, ese imprevisto la tomó por sorpresa.

Nos dijo que normalmente si, aunque no estaba el encargado, quien se ocupaba de ello. Le dijimos que vinimos especialmente por ello y nos prometió que intentaría ponerse de acuerdo con el responsable para conseguir la forma de complacernos.

No recuerdo si lo que necesitaba era una confirmación o más bien la explicación de cómo realizar el pago, pero los continuos intentos de llamada y las largas conversaciones le tomaron un tiempo.

While that was happening, we got comfortable and checked the menu very quickly, we were very hungry and if in the end we couldn't pay in crypto, the last thing we were going to do was to get out of there to look for another place, so we decided to stay without knowing if it would be a failed experiment or not.

That moment felt right and more comfortable enough to propose to the guys to take the first selfie of this long adventure together. Hours before I was a little shy, but from that first photo, there has been no one to stop me hahahaha.

Then I went ahead to the bar to get to know the local beer offer and start discovering the brewing world in Guatemala.

The girl at the bar explained to me the types and origin of the tap options and poured me a glass of El príncipe Gris dunkel craft beer.

This choice was a total success as my first beer in the country. One of the styles I like, rather than dark, or dunkel, I found it toasty at a good level and easy to drink.

@buttcoins told us that he used to deal with this brand many years ago. They were the first craft beer producers in Guatemala, but once they got a foothold, the cost went up and it was no longer a good deal for our host's local sale. Now, it is a high level beer with a higher cost than regular mass production.

Mientras eso sucedía, nosotros nos pusimos cómodos y revisamos muy rápido el menú, teníamos mucha hambre y si al final no podíamos pagar en crypto, lo que menos íbamos a hacer era salir de allí a buscar otro sitio, así que decidimos quedarnos sin saber si sería un experimento fallido o no.

Ese momento se sintió adecuado y más a gusto como para proponerle a los chicos hacernos juntos la primera selfie de esta larga aventura. Horas antes me daba algo de vergüenza, pero a partir de esa primera foto, ya no ha habido nadie que me detenga jajajaja.

Luego me adelanté a la barra para conocer la oferta de cervezas locales y comenzar a descubrir el mundo cervecero de Guatemala.

La chica de la barra me explicó los tipos y el origen de las opciones de grifo y me sirvió una copa de cerveza artesanal El príncipe Gris dunkel.

Esta opción fue un acierto total como mi primera cerveza en el país. Uno de los estilo que me gusta, más que oscura, o dunkel, me pareció tostada a buen nivel y fácil de beber.

@buttcoins nos contó que solía trabajar hace muchos con esta marca. Fueron los primeros productores de cerveza artesanal en Guatemala, pero una vez que que lograron posicionarse, el costo subió y dejó de ser un buen trato para la venta local de nuestro anfitrión. Ahora, es una cerveza de alto nivel con un costo superior a las de producción masiva.

Here you can check out the Opíparo Menu , however that night they didn't have a couple of hamburger options, because my first choice, which I don't remember now what it was, was not available.

I decided to order La flaca, which by the name could not be misleading, because it was not slim at all. I quote the content according to the menu "Frayed pork braised in our maple and beer BBQ, cabbage slaw, house pickles and mustard". I said, skinny ain't nothin' on it.

Hahaha I didn't understand the brazuelo at first, the richness of the Spanish language and all its variants confused me, but from the rest of the ingredients we quickly deduced that it was a version of the pulled pork recipe.

Our order took about 20 minutes to be ready and while it was being prepared, you could look directly into the kitchen and follow the making of the burgers.

When our food arrived at the table, it took quite a short time for it to disappear. We were very hungry and I remember thinking that I could easily eat two burgers instead of one. It wasn't gluttonous, I was satisfied, although I found the size to be a little smaller than I expected, but in return the flavor and texture of the elements that make up the burger, were very well cared for and really delicious.

Aquí se puede consultar el Menú de Opíparo , sin embargo esa noche no contaban con un par de opciones de hamburguesas, porque mi primera opción, que no recuerdo ahora cual era, no estaba disponible.

Decidí pedirme La flaca, que por el nombre no podría ser engañosa, pues de flaca no tenía nada. Cito el contenido según el menú “Brazuelo de cerdo deshilachado bañado en nuestra BBQ de maple y cerveza, ensalada de repollo, pepinillos de la casa y mostaza”. Lo dicho, de flaca no tiene nada.

Jajaja lo del brazuelo no lo entendía de entrada, la riqueza del idioma español y todas sus variantes me confundió, pero por el resto de ingredientes dedujimos rápido que se trataba de una versión del pulled pork de toda la vida.

Nuestra orden tardó unos 20 minutos en estar lista y mientras la preparaban, podías ver directamente a la cocina y seguir la elaboración de las hamburguesas.

Cuando nuestra comida llegó a la mesa, tardó bastante poco en desaparecer. Teníamos mucha hambre y recuerdo pensar que podía fácilmente comerme dos hamburguesas en vez de una. No era gula, quede satisfecha, aunque me precio que de tamaño eran un poco más pequeñas de lo que me esperaba, pero a cambio el sabor y textura de los elementos que componen la hamburguesa, estaban muy cuidados y realmente deliciosos.

While we were eating we got the good news that they had contacted the person in charge and given them the green light to accept our crypto payment. It felt like a victory and I don't think I had ever been excited to receive the bill and pay for it before. 🤣

Well, I have to say I didn't have much faith that it would work either because I had seen a lot of hesitation on the waitress' face at first and because I hadn't really done a transaction like this before.

I wasn't quite prepared either, I had my hbd in savings and when we split the bill to make the payment, the transaction failed hahaha. @starkerz sent me some hbd's so I could experiment and understand the process myself, so we tried again and the transaction worked smoothly and quickly.

While we were experimenting with me and before @buttcoins made their part of the payment, we realized that the QR that the business generates to make the payment, expires quickly, so once it is created you have to scan it and make the transaction at the moment, because if you make it and wait a long time before scanning and paying, the link stops working and you have to start over.

Mientras comíamos nos dieron la buena noticia de que habían contactado con el responsable y les había dado luz verde para aceptar nuestro pago en crypto. Lo sentimos como una victoria y creo que nunca antes había sentido emoción por recibir la cuenta y pagarla. 🤣

Bueno, tengo que decir que tampoco tenía mucha fe en que funcionara porque había visto mucha duda en el rostro de la camarera al principio y porque, realmente, no había hecho una transacción de este tipo antes.

Tampoco estaba del todo preparada, tenia mis hbd en savings y cuando dividimos la cuenta para hacer el pago, la transacción falló jajaja. @starkerz me envió unos hbd para que yo misma pudiera experimentar y entender el proceso, así que lo volvimos a intentar y la transacción funcionó sin problemas y con rapidez.

Mientras experimentábamos conmigo y antes de que @buttcoins hiciera su parte del pago, nos dimos cuenta que el QR que genera el negocio para realizar el cobro, caduca rápidamente, así que una vez que esté se genera hay que escanearlo y realizar la transacción al momento, porque si lo generan y esperan mucho rato antes de escanear y pagar, el enlace deja de funcionar y hay que volver a empezar.

At that time I also began to understand and learn how to create content from my new adventure partners. Maybe I premeditate things a lot and take my time to make the content I share as nice and actually more like me as much as possible, neat, symmetrical, pretty. But that's what makes me take so much time and takes so long to write any post hahaha.

They were generating video after video, test after test, demonstrating the flaws, timing and usability of this payment method non-stop. No scripts, no headaches hahaha it's fun to watch, Hive has room for everyone. But I'm going to continue to calmly write my thoughts on it hahaha.

I have a lot to learn and I've realized that I can find a way to balance both parts, I'm just still in love with this format of long format blogs, where I write down every feeling and thought and keep a record of my experiences as a discontinuous diary. In the end, the important thing is to enjoy the journey and I am.

En ese momento también comencé a entender y aprender la forma de crear contenido de mis nuevos compañeros de aventura. Quizá yo premedito mucho las cosas y me tomo mi tiempo para que el contenido que comparto sea lo más agradable y, en realidad, más parecido a mi en lo posible, ordenado, simétrico, bonito. Pero eso es lo que hace que me tome tanto tiempo y tarde en escribir cualquier post jajaja.

Ellos estaban generando vídeo tras vídeo, prueba tras prueba, demostrando las fallas, el tiempo y la usabilidad de este método de pago sin parar. Sin guiones ni dolores de cabeza jajaja es divertido verlo, Hive tiene espacio para todos. Pero yo voy a seguir escribiendo con calma mis reflexiones al respecto jajaja.

Tengo mucho que aprender y me he dado cuenta que puedo encontrar una forma de equilibrar ambas partes, solo que sigo enamorada de este formato de vlogs largos, en donde escribo cada sensación y pensamiento y dejo constancia de mis experiencias como un diario discontinuo. Al final, lo importante es disfrutar del camino y yo lo estoy haciendo.

After being able to pay for our dinner with hbds, we happily returned to our lodging where we would rest for a couple of nights. The way back was both charming and fun, we stumbled upon lovely corners of the city and waving flags in the moonlight, but we also got lost again.

We wandered around looking for the building by its height, instead of looking at the map and got distracted by a Bitcoin ATM that didn't allow us to make hbd transactions, but took our attention away from the road making us take an unnecessary turn to get home, walking in circles once again. Tiredness was taking its toll and we were oblivious.

In spite of that, when we arrived home, we continued chatting for a long time about the impressions of that day, the expectations of this trip that was just beginning and the transcendental importance of what we could achieve with this project. I can only say that it has been very worthwhile to immerse ourselves deeply in this adventure and that there are many more things to be told.

Después de haber podido pagar nuestra cena con hbds, regresamos felizmente al alojamiento en donde descansaríamos un par de noches. El camino de regreso fue a igual partes encantador como divertido, nos topamos con llamativos rincones por la ciudad y banderas ondeantes a la luz de la luna, pero también nos perdimos otra vez.

Andábamos buscando el edificio por su altura, en vez de mirar el mapa y nos distrajimos con un cajero Bitcoin que no nos permitió hacer transacciones en hbd, pero nos apartó la atención del camino haciéndonos dar una vuelta innecesaria para llegar a casa, caminando en círculos una vez más. El cansancio estaba haciendo de las suyas y nosotros no nos dábamos cuenta.

A pesar de eso, cuando llegamos a casa, seguimos charlando largo rato sobre las impresiones de ese día, las expectativas de este viaje que apenas comenzaba y de la trascendental importancia de lo que podríamos llegar a alcanzar con este proyecto. Tan sólo puedo adelantar, que ha valido mucho la pena sumergirnos profundamente en esta aventura y que hay muchísimas cosas más por contar.
