I feel you, I'm a rural person and would only be in a city by sheer necessity. I get the feeling most of these people are urban dwellers their whole lives so find comfort in the city. It's easy to scavenge, the "help" is nearby, and their drugs are likely more available in the city. There are also the ones that are creative and build out caves or structures along the river or the 90.

One occasionally reads stories of clever people who build secret homes and siphon off city utilities in miniature luxury apartments. And there is unimaginable wealth to be found by dumpster diving. If someone could live that way in a city, it might be fun.
