Saturday mornings are usually marked by an activity in my case - I go to the street market to buy fresh fruits and vegetables. I know I can buy all of these things at supermarkets, but the truth is there is a huge difference in the taste of the products... and also in the price. A week ago, @LivingUkTaiwan published an interesting initiative. She listed the prices of some goods in her country and suggested we do the same, sharing the prices of those same products in our country. Her post made me think - the price of food may not be more expensive in Spain, but the housing issue has gone beyond the limits of a normal Spanish family. I mean, if you are renting a flat or a house in a tourist area, such as where we lived all the time until recently, you may already be paying more than you earn for the entire month just for the rent. But that would be another topic as I wanted to focus on the food today. Especially fresh products, you can buy in the street markets for considerably less money than you would pay for the same in the supermarkets.
Also, I hope this topic is suitable for the very new community of Spanish Hivers, Hive España. I would like to publish this post in that community, as well as some other themes in the future so Hivers that come to Spain to spend some days or more time can already come well prepared for what to expect or where to purchase food or other products. For the same reason, publishing in Hive España, I will have a Spanish translation too, as one of the rules common sense requirements is to have at least a translation to Spanish. Let's look at my shopping bag of this morning. Later I went to buy fresh meat and artisan bread at the bakery, but I don't like seeing meat in photos, so I focus only on fruits and vegetables now.
Las mañanas de los sábados suelen estar marcadas por una actividad en mi caso: voy al mercadillo a comprar fruta y verdura fresca. Sé que puedo comprar todo esto en el supermercado, pero lo cierto es que hay una gran diferencia en el sabor de los productos... y también en el precio. Hace una semana, LivingUkTaiwan publicó una iniciativa interesante. Enumeró los precios de algunos productos en su país y sugirió que hiciéramos lo mismo, compartiendo los precios de esos mismos productos en el nuestro. Su publicación me hizo pensar: puede que la comida no sea más cara en España, pero el problema de la vivienda ha trascendido el ámbito de una familia española normal. Es decir, si alquilas un piso o una casa en una zona turística, como donde vivíamos hasta hace poco, puede que ya estés pagando más de lo que ganas al mes solo por el alquiler. Pero ese sería otro tema, ya que hoy quería centrarme en la comida. Sobre todo, los productos frescos que se pueden comprar en los mercadillos por bastante menos dinero que en los supermercados.
Además, espero que este tema sea apropiado para la nueva comunidad de Hivers españoles. Me gustaría publicar esta entrada en dicha comunidad, así como otros temas en el futuro, para que los Hivers que vengan a España a pasar unos días o más puedan venir bien preparados para saber qué esperar o dónde comprar comida u otros productos. Cauliflower
My sister loves (actually adores) cauliflower. I just like it, so I don't buy it too often, only every now and then. We like to boil it in salted water, top it with sour cream and breadcrumbs, and bake it in the oven. This piece of cauliflower cost 1,10 €.
A mi hermana le encanta (de hecho, adora) la coliflor. A mí solo me gusta, así que no la compro muy a menudo, solo de vez en cuando. Nos gusta hervirla en agua con sal, cubrirla con crema agria y pan rallado, y hornearla. Esta coliflor me costó 1,10 €.
Zucchini and red peppers
I really like zucchini; I use it a lot in various cooked dishes so it often comes to my shopping basket. The price of this piece of zucchini was 0,78 €. Yesterday, my mom said she bought peppers in her country, and they cost 4€ per kg. What? Here, at the market today, I paid 0.37 € for these two.
Me encanta el calabacín; lo uso mucho en varios platos cocinados, así que suele acabar en mi cesta de la compra muchas veces. El precio de este calabacín fue de 0,78 €. Ayer, mi madre me dijo que había comprado pimientos en su país y que costaban 4 € el kilo. ¿Qué? Hoy, en el mercado, pagué 0,37 € por estos dos.
Tangerines!
The best tangerines I have had this winter, even though they are almost out of season. They are still delicious, the ones I buy at my usual stand. The price is a bit more expensive, but I love them... I paid 3.79 € for a kilo and a half.

Potatoes
I think the best feeling was to buy these potatoes as I am a bit frustrated with their price in the supermarkets (around 2 € per kilogram). Guess how much it costs in the street market stall?
0,89 € per kilogram.
The amount you see here at my kitchen table is one and a half kg, so the price was 1,40 €.

Tomatoes.
There are none that can taste the same as the ones from your own garden... but these from the market are similar in taste (I never buy them in the supermarket because they are simply tasteless and horrible). The amount you see here is a bit less than a kilogram and I paid for them 1,17 €.

This is the content from the bag from the first photo. I also bought red apples, just 4 as they are quite big so I don't need more for this week. And the price of the whole lot was 10,44 €.
