Spring Colours
Easter preparations are already underway! This year's Easter falls on Sunday, April 20th. Shops are always quick to get ready for seasonal events, and Easter is no exception. The colours of Easter (and spring) include pink, yellow, sky blue, fresh green, and more.
I love chocolate so much, so it's really challenging to ignore the Easter treat section. However, almost all of these candies look very sweet. I prefer the bitter taste of chocolate.
These guys are the standard Easter chocolates at local stores. I think there are too many Easter Bunny chocolates! But when I looked closely, I noticed a tiny version of a bunny next to the big one. I've never seen that size before. It's so cute!
In Japan, snack packages sometimes contain intentionally different designs or special sizes. If you find a heart-shaped design or a rare version, it’s considered lucky! Fortune is such an important concept in Asia. I thought, wouldn’t it be nice if the person who gets this tiny Easter Bunny receives good luck?
I love Lindt chocolate because it’s so creamy. Lindt is originally from Switzerland. As much as I enjoy it, if I eat the chick-shaped chocolates next to the Easter Bunny on the shelf, I think I’d be overwhelmed by chocolate!
Hershey's chocolate is also very popular, but for me, it’s too sweet. I don’t mind eating very sweet things, but for some reason, it depends on the type of sweetness.
I think Japanese-style sweets, such as bean paste treats, rice cakes (mochi), and sweet buns (manjū), are also very sweet, yet I don’t mind eating them. Maybe the size matters too. If it's too big, it feels like too much.
That said, if I were a kid and found these adorable chocolates at an event, I’d definitely be happy! I just have to be careful about a sugar high.
Oh, there are Ferrero Rocher egg versions! They’re huge. Ferrero Rocher is originally from Italy. It’s such a special and rich chocolate. One standard-sized piece is enough for me. I don’t think I could finish an entire egg by myself.
I remember there used to be an egg-shaped chocolate called "Twinkle" in Japan. Inside the small chocolate eggs were tiny, colourful star-and-circle-shaped candies. It was made by Meiji. I loved eating them because breaking the eggs was so much fun!
I think some people enjoy sweets that involve an interactive element, like breaking or discovering something while eating. If I ever made my own chocolate product, I’d want to create something simple yet playful, just like that.
These guys are marshmallows called Peeps. Peeps originated in the US. I don’t eat marshmallows, but I like their texture. This Easter version of Peeps looks so colorful—I can easily imagine little kids enjoying them. I wonder if their tongues turn the same colour as the marshmallows!
Do you like roasting marshmallows over a campfire and eating them with chocolate cookies as sandwiches? Or do you prefer drinking hot chocolate and dipping marshmallows into it? For me, those are too sweet, but I love making them for others. Again, the texture of marshmallows is so nice.
Marshmallows originated in France. I had no idea! But considering all the famous French sweets like Madeleine, Canelé, Choux à la crème, Éclair, Flan, Mont Blanc, Macarons, and more. It’s not surprising at all.
I’ve never been to France, but I love French sweets. I wonder if I could try authentic French pastries if I visited Montreal!

春の色合い
もうすでに、この辺りではイースターの準備が密かに始まっています。今年のイースターは４月２０日の日曜日だそうです。店はいつも季節のイベントの準備が早いですね。年々、早まっている気がします。イースターと春の色合いはピンク、黄色、水色、新緑などなど、色鮮やかです。
わたしはチョコレートが大好きなので、チョコレートコーナーを無視して通り過ぎるのはなかなかのチャレンジです。ところが、これらのお菓子はかなり甘そうです。ビターチョコレートが好きなわたしにはちょっと甘ずぎるかなと思います。
彼らはイースターの定番チョコで、この辺りのお店には時期になるとズラーっと並びます。ちょっと多すぎる気がしますが。よく見てみると、大きなイースターバニーのチョコの間に小さなイースターバニーチョコが混ざっていますね。このサイズのチョコは見たことがありませんでした。かわいらしいです。
日本では、お菓子のパッケージの中に一風変わったデザインや他とは違うサイズをひとつだけ混ぜるなんていうことがよくあると思います。ハート型のデザインがひとつだけ入っていたり、レアバージョンがこっそりと入っているなどなど…。レアものが当たった人はラッキーなことが起こるとか。アジアでは占い的な要素を含んだお菓子が人気ですね。そんなわけで、この小さなイースターバニーが当たる人はラッキーなのではないでしょうか。
リンツのチョコはとてもクリーミーでおいしいです。元々はスイスの商品なのですね。リンツのチョコは好きですが、いくら好きでもこのひよこサイズの大きさを食べるのはやり過ぎな感じがします！
こちらはお馴染みのハーシーズです。わたしにはちょっと甘すぎます。かなり甘いお菓子を食べることはできますが、甘さの質にもよる気がします。
日本の和菓子もとても甘いですが、あんこ、もち、まんじゅうなどの甘さは好きです。サイズもかなり関係があるような気がします。あまりに大きすぎると、やり過ぎ感がでてしまうようです。
自分が子供であると想像すると、もしこんなに大きなチョコを見つけたらもちろん嬉しくなるでしょう。砂糖ハイにならないように気をつけなければなりませんね。
フェレロ・ロシェのたまごバージョンもありました。デカいですね。フェレロ・ロシェのチョコはイタリアが発祥だそうです。とてもリッチな味のチョコレートです。定番のサイズを１個食べれば十分です。このたまごサイズをひとりで完食できる自信はありません。
明治チョコレートから出ている「ツインクル」というお菓子を思い出しました。小さなたまご型のチョコレートの中に、小さい色とりどりの星型や丸型のあめが入っているのです。そのたまごのチョコを食べるのは楽しくて好きでした。
お菓子を壊したり、探したりしながら食べるのはとてもおもしろいですよね。もし自分がチョコの作り手だとしたら、定番のシンプルな板チョコはもちろん作りたいですが、遊び心のあるお菓子も作りたいと思います。
これらはPeepsというマシュマロです。アメリカ製です。マシュマロは滅多に食べませんが、感触は好きです。イースターのマシュマロはとてもカラフルですね。子どもたちが喜んで食べている姿が想像できます。でも、食べた後に舌がこの色にならないのでしょうか…。
キャンプファイヤーで焼くマシュマロは好きですか？そのマシュマロをチョコのビスケットに挟んでマシュマロサンドウィッチにして食べるやつです。または、ココアの中に入れてとかしながら飲むマシュマロは好きですか？私はどちらも特に好きではありませんので食べませんが、作るのは好きです。上にも書いたようにマシュマロの感触が好きだからです。
マシュマロはフランス発祥なのですね。知りませんでした。でも、よくよく考えてみると、フランスはスイーツで有名ですものね。マドレーヌ、カヌレ、シュークリーム、エクレア、フラン、モンブラン、マカロンなどなど。マシュマロもフランス製なのは納得がいきます。
わたしはフランスに一度も行ったことがありませんが、フランスのお菓子が大好きです。もし、モントリオールを訪れたら、本格的なフランスのお菓子を食べることができるのでしょうか。
お菓子のことを考える時間は幸せになります。みなさんはどんなスイーツがいちばん好きですか？
