Holidays baking: Meringue

Hello everyone! I am not really a masterchef and don't like cooking / baking that much, but as I am participating in the ongoing WOO Zealy contest and one of the quests is to bake something, I thought why not give it a try? So here we go, I went for creating my own meringue. First I wanted to just bake the standard version, but when I was doing so, I thought I could add an extra element to the meringue. Let's head over to the ingedrients I needed:

Ingredients:

  • 250 gram of cristal sugar
  • 4 whites of an egg
  • half a lemon

That's it! As you can see, you don't need much to create your own meringue. I have to admit I thought 250 gram of sugar would be a lot, so I decided to only use 200 gram which still seemed quite enough. A little sneek peek, when I tasted them, they were definitely sweet enough for me.

Before we can really start, we need to use the half lemon to rub it over the bowl you'll use later on and over the mixer. This is to prevent that there is any fat on both as you won't be able to mix up your egg whites completely. Afterwards you won't need the lemon anymore. Personally, as I don't like it to throw food away, I used the leftover lemon juice to flavor a glass of drinking water.

Now we can really start, you first need to mix the egg whites until they are completely mixed. As you can see on the picture below, I used a mixer but it's possible by hand as well. When the egg whites have a decent consistency, you can slowly add the sugar while mixing it under the mixed egg whites.

When you're ready with the above, you can prepare the plate for the oven. By the way, you know that it's ready once the mix is having a nice texture, like when you remove the mixer and you get a nice curl in the texture. Now you have to add small portions of the mix on a baking paper to put it in the oven. You can use a bag to create nice looking towers or just use a spoon if you don't care that much about how it looks. I used a bag to create a good looking form. As I made them, inspired by the WOO zealy contest, I laid down the meringues in the form of WOO as you can see below:

When my bag I used to spray the mix on the baking paper was empty, I thought I could add some chocolate springles to give an extra touch to the leftover mix. So I added these and mixed it once more.

I was too lazy to use another bag, so just used a spoon and poured it on another baking paper. It looked a bit less nice, but I made them for the taste anyway so didn't care that much.

Now I had to prewarm the oven at 100 degrees Celsius. When the oven was hot, the meringues had to be in the 100 degrees Celsius oven for about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Than they were ready to be eaten.

Although I am definitely not a chef, following this (easy) recipe worked out well. Both the standard ones and the chocolate chipped ones tasted really well!

Love these cookies/confections, especially when they are just the slightest bit chewy in the middle while still crunchy and caramelized on the outside!

Most of mine turned out to be like that, although I wanted them to be rockhard initially. But when I tasted them, I enjoyed the little chewy middle as well. I even found it better! :D
