I Saw I Came I Ate - KL Chilli Ban Mee - A Satisfying Meal After Work

Hello all, hope all of you are doing fine and it's been a while since I last posted in the community. I am glad to be back again to share on a new place for food that I visited with @silent.nightowl today afternoon after he helped me for an event as an assistant as I did event photography coverage. We were a little famished after the event so we decided to have a nice meal before we head back home.

The Place
KL Chilli Ban Mee
Address: 314 Bedok Rd, Singapore 469478

This place in Singapore is commonly known as Simpang Bedok. It is a little hard to access without a car as the public transport coming into this place is fewer than other areas. It is also a famous supper spot where it house the famous Spize eatery which served awesome maggie goreng. But today, we are not eating that since it is lunch, so we went for something that is easier to eat and not that commonly found in other places within Singapore.

So in Simpang Bedok, there are many food options ranging from Chinese to Malay to Indian food. And most of these eateries will not burn your wallet into ashes as they are rather affordable.

Here's how the place looks like:

A really simple, nice and cozy eatery that is not cramp. Things are being arranged very orderly and cutleries and the flaming chilli can be access easily for every table. The only thing that probably didn't go well with me will be the lights within the eatery is a little too dim for my liking. Otherwise, decent ambience and well maintained. As it was slightly later than lunch time, whole place only had us and another group of patrons. Now let's move on to the food itself.

The Food

Both of us were really hungry after the event and it was already passed the usual lunch hour, so we ordered the following:

  • Combo Ban Mee (Me)
  • Fried Wanton Ban Mee (Owl)
  • Finger Food Set
  • Beverages

I underestimated the amount of the finger food set, but since we were both hungry, I think it should not be a problem for us. Right in the middle is what makes the meal satisfying, the chilli! A simple and fussy free meal that is easy to eat.

So now let's dive into each of the items that we ordered.

Combo Ban Mee (noodles)

Combo Ban Mee

When it was served, I was like, ok this is a bowl of dried noodles with a fried wanton, a fish ball, a meat ball, fish cakes and fried scallion. Looks kinda ordinary. Was flipping the noodles to verify if there were any sauce below the noodles. I guess it was just a light seasoning. Felt like this is gonna be a bad meal, but wait, the star of chilli ban mee had not been added to the noodles. And this is the game changer, without the chilli, this dish is just normal or even sub par to other noodles. When the chilli is added, everything changed. The flavours were elevated and everything just "comes alive". So the noodles were only cooked with light seasoning so that we can self manage the amount of chilli that we want to add from the bottle of chilli that is found on every table. Everything becomes balanced and so nice to eat. Every bite with the spice added from the chilli is a joy to munch on. This chilli is really like some magic powder and the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle to complete the dish.

Will not be covering the Fried Wanton Ban Mee unless nightowl has some inputs.

Finger Food Platter

Usually a bowl of ban mee is nice for a meal, but somehow whenever I eat ban mee, there is always room for more. And since both of us were really hungry, I just ordered an additional finger food platter to complete the meal. When it was served, I was like "oops", looks like it is too big a plate for us to finish. But not sure why, I guess both of us worked too hard and gobbled down everything.

The platter contained 4 items, namely the fried wanton found in our ban mee, some stuff meat rolls (wu xiang), pop corn chicken and lastly fried fishcake. All of it are fried really well with nothing over fried that made it hard to bite on. All nice and crispy with the popcorn chicken being my favourite. A big plate of goodies fully wiped out by two hungry men.

Overall:
This is a nice place that we spotted while trying to get some food after the event. Food served was really nice and satisfying to our stomach. One additional thing to note, this particular outlet that we visited is halal certified, so fellow muslim friends who love spicy noodles can drop by to savour it. A strong recommendation from the both of us and we will definitely come back for more if we are in the area.

Closing
Thank you for coming by and reading my post and thank you to nightowl for being such a nice buddy to me and helping me out at the event. Glad we both had a nice and satisfying meal to wrap up the day.

See you in the next post!
