Hello all, hope all of you are doing fine and having a good weekend thus far. I am back again to share on something that is considerably the icon dish of the neighbourhood that I lived in. Why do I say so, this because they used the location name in the name and many in the neighbour all know about their existence. So let's get right on into today's post.
The Place
White Restaurant
Address: 30 Sembawang Drive, #03-12, Sun Plaza, Singapore 757713
This is not the main original outlet that the famous bee hoon is being developed and served. However, I believe it is the younger generation of the family decided to expand the business and open up a few outlets across the country. And this has unknowingly help to ease of mad queues at the main outlet and allow more people to savour this amazing dish.
As this particular outlet is found within a shopping mall that is right beside a mass rapid transit (MRT) station which means it is easily accessible and there are plenty of carpark available in the mall. The restaurant is spacious and clean, they have large tables and medium sized tables available so it is perfect it one wants to have a big family dinner or just a simple meal amongst friends.
Here's how the place looks like:
As you can see, the place is really spacious with loads of walking space and very well renovated. Everything looked really clean and a nice place to have a meal. Now that we've seen the restaurant itself, time to shift focus to the main highlight, the food.
The Food
Since this place is famous for white bee hoon, we definitely have to order it.
So in total, here is what we've ordered:
- White Bee Hoon
- Calamari Fried in Salted Egg Yolk Sauce
- Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves
- Jasmine Tea x 2
White Bee Hoon
The plate of bee hoon with loads of ingredients is the famous Sembawang White Bee Hoon. It may look like just a simple dish which think it can be easily replicate, but while there are many other places (especially those that are in Sembawang), all are missing something as compared to the original. The key to this dish is the broth and the special chilli sauce with a sour twang that goes super well when mixed into the broth. The broth is definitely loaded with a lot of essence from ingredients chosen to give it the nice umami taste. The broth definitely had loads of seafood and pork bone being used and simmered over long hours for each of the essence from all the ingredient to flow into the broth.
This bee hoon that is doused with so much broth is also served with a nice array of seafood including, squid, prawns and scallop. Look at the 2 huge and juicy scallop in the photo, they just look and tasted really nice. Every ingredient is fresh and cooked to the right texture. This is a dish that must be ordered if you come to this restaurant, it is so good and you will feel very satisfied upon finishing it. Remember to squeeze the lime that is provided to give it a slight zesty feel to the broth. The special chilli is always not enough to go around, so just wave to the friendly waitress and they will gladly serve you more chilli. On to the next dish.
Calamari in Salted Egg Yolk Sauce
Now, we look at the dish which is made up of squid that is lightly friend and subsequently, stir fried in salted egg yolk sauce. Every single piece of squid is coated well with the sauce and the taste is really good. The sauce is not overpowering and enhances the taste of the squid. A nice dish to accompany the white bee hoon.
Sambal Sweet Potato Leaves
Another dish that cannot go wrong. For this, I've eaten this dish from many other places but somehow the sweet potato leaves from this place felt a little softer especially the stem. I guess they might have further cooked the stem in order to let it have a softer bite as compared to this dish that is served at other places. The sambal sauce is so nice and I believe some part of the special chilli for the white bee hoon could be used here as well.
Jasmine Tea
Just a quick shout out on this as good quality tea bags are being used and each cup came with an individual tea bag where hot water top up can be made upon trigger. Nice to have some tea to go with all the big loaded seafood found in the bee hoon.
Overall:
A special place and a special dish. A simple looking bee hoon is the icon of the estate of Sembawang and for me, this is simply amazing and really living up to its reputation. And I do agree that, only the authentic white bee hoon from the White Restaurant really deserve to represent Sembawang. The dish is no shy of ingredient and only fresh and good quality ingredients are being used to cook up that dish. The accompany dishes such as the calamari and the sweet potato leaves are good complementary dishes that help to complete the meal.
If there is an outlet in your area or if you have some craving for some white bee hoon, look no further, this dish is well worth your money and it is not expensive as well. I am very certain that you will like it and even come back for more! Do remember to reserve seats especially during special occasion such as Mothers Day or Fathers Day as they will be jammed packed.
