Happy Sunday, wholesome reader!
Our Sundays are special because everyone is at home. I and my brother live in the city for work and school and we make sure to go home on the weekends to spend family time.
Our usual routine on Sundays includes I, cooking for breakfast, and my brother, cooking for lunch. But sometimes I also help him cook for lunch, especially when I have some recipe in mind that I want to try.
I stumbled upon this recipe online and wanted to try it so badly since it looked so delicious 😋 To add, I love cabbage so it's totally a dish I need to try making – steamed cabbage rolls!
I find this as a very simple recipe. It's a little similar to lumpia but the difference between the two is its wrapper. Here, we're going to use the cabbage as the wrapper.
Ingredients List
For this recipe, one is going to need the following ingredients:
- 1 pc cabbage
- 1/4 kg ground pork
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp pepper
- 3 tbsp oyster sauce
- 5 cloves of garlic
- 1 pc small red onion
- 1 pc small carrot
- 1 pc egg
For the sauce, the following are needed:
- Soy sauce
- Calamansi
- Chili and garlic
Preparation and Cooking
First, wash the cabbage and strip off its leaves. Be careful to preserve the leaves' shape and not tear them. Soak them in water to retain its freshness while we prepare the other ingredients.
Then, cut the onion, garlic, and carrot into small bits. Simultaneously, prepare the ground pork in a bowl for mixing with other ingredients.
Next, mix the oyster sauce into the bowl of ground pork. Add shortly the minced garlic, onion, and carrot.
Before we mix it all together, add the egg and salt. Right after, mix all the ingredients in the bowl until fully combined.
Now that our mixture is ready, we're good to wrap them in cabbage leaves. Take about one tablespoon of the mixture and put it on top of one cabbage leaf. Wrap the leaf securely.
Do this until all the cabbage leaves and ground pork are consumed. Put them in the steamer and steam the rolls for 30 to 40 minutes.
While waiting for the rolls to cook, you can prepare the sauce. Simply mix soy sauce, calamansi, and chili and garlic according to your taste preferences.
The sauce is super duper easy and would only take you about 5 minutes to prepare. And in the meantime, while waiting for the rolls, you can do anything else like wash the utensils you've used, read a book, or watch a YouTube video.
The time has passed and, viola! Your cabbage rolls are now ready for meal time!
Taste Test
The rolls are perfectly steamed, the cabbage wrapper was just soft enough and was still able to hold its contents. However, the overall taste was a bit bland. I might add more salt the next time I make these.
Also, if you want your pork to taste according to your preferences, you can also opt to partially cook the pork first, then drain out the oil, and add them to your cabbage wrappings.
Thank you for reading my post up to this point. I hope you have a great time ahead!
I'll take delight in writing for you again soon.
