I do not like it either for roughly the same reason ... I simply refuse to engage with them, thereby helping the test fail!
I am completely unaware of this for some reason. I have never seen an ad that I know of (or recall) on Peakd, which is good because I am aware of the financial power advertisers gain over those paid by them, and will oppose them to the limits of my power.
It may have to do with your settings -- I manually went in and turned them off once I knew that was a option.
If there is such a setting I probably automatically set it to not show me ads on principle, a principle I maintain, because advertisers necessarily gain influence over their chosen venues, and that's just the beginning of the noxious influence of stake and pandering it farms.
