My upcycled dungarees dress

A couple of months ago I mentioned I was going to use some off cuts from my denim jeans to make another project. It's taken me a while because it's all hand sewn, but I got there in the end and here's the final product. Let me show you what I've made

Here's the bits of denim that I'm going to upcycle. I need to make a wider piece by sewing three pieces together. One of the pieces was missing a corner so added a patch in between two pieces. That's fine because patchwork makes a interesting feature and it's the back which has nothing on it.

Now I have the width I need, I need to adjust the length.

This is the front and I'm playing around with where to add some pockets. There's two reasons for doing this. First, it's nice to add some details otherwise the front will be very bland and boring. And second, there are some holes in some areas. Adding a pocket will cover them up!! I've also added some straps at the top.

Originally I planned to sew and fix everything in place, then I thought it would be better to have some flexibility. I bought some press studs for the front, and some d-rings to make adjustable straps.

The press studs makes it easier to open up the garment. And now the pockets have a third purpose - to cover up the stitching of the press studs.

The only problem was the top press stud. I didn't have a pocket to cover it up as adding a third pocket would make the front look very busy.

I decided to add a bow instead, just a little one to cover up the stitches, and to make it look a bit cuter. I also sewed the straps on using pink thread to make it stand out, and add a little colour to the blue denim.

And here's the final product, a little dungaree dress for my great niece. I'm not sure if she liked it or not as she didn't seem too impressed 😅. When I was making the dress, I took the "work in progress" to measure her up a couple of times. She enjoyed that a lot, when I told her to raise her little arms and wrapped the fabric and tape measure around her. Maybe she thought it was a fun game. But with the final product, I had to coax her a few times before she would wear it and model it for me. I hope she likes it, I do 😁

Haha, you’re really skillful — that little outfit is so cute!

By the way, I have a few pairs of jeans that always get worn out around the knees.
The only solution I can think of is to turn them into denim shorts — just a quick snip, and it’s done...

Exactly. This is the only acceptable use for old jeans!

Looks like neither of us is as skillful and handy as @livinguktaiwan, hahaha.

These are the legs that I cut off from my jeans to make shorts earlier this year, but the shorts involved a bit more work as a I had to patch up the inner thighs first 🫣😅

The dress looks super cute, and I am sure she liked it, but can't just express it yet. I am sure one day she will adore the handmade dress a lot...What a great use of a jeans...

Her mum says she likes pink and red, maybe blue wasn't to her taste, let's see next year, I think it will still fit her

That turned out really great. It's crazy just how versatile denim is like that. I know in some houses they use old jeans as insulation in the walls.

I've never heard about using jeans to insulate walls before, but it makes sense, they're so durable, lasts forever.

What a wonderful way of recycling fabric! Great job! 😃

Thanks Kitty. It was fun to make it

Wow, well done! It was a lot of work to achieve this result. 👏 If I were your niece, I would be more than happy with that awesome dress - and I am sure she also likes it, she looks super cute wearing it. 😍

I agree, she's super cute anyway, with or without her new dress, just not sure if she's a big fan of the dress 😂

Wow I loved this project 🥰. I'm impressed to know that you sewed it entirely by hand. No wonder it took you some time, hand sewing is very labor intensive, but the result is spectacular!!! Your great niece looks super cool in that recycled denim dress and that bow detail is so cute 🥹! Un abrazo 🤗.

Luckily there wasn't much sewing involved, I kept it as simple as possible for my kindergarten level 😁, and I was making things up as I went along, that's why it took quite a long time

It was super cool and above all made with lots of love 🥰🤗

Cute. My other half does some sewing and she enjoys the Sewing Bee on TV. Those people on there work so fast. My brother-in-law was at school with the judge Patrick.

I like Sewing Bee as well, people are so skillful, actually I felt a bit like I was in the second challenge when I was making this.

I never went to school with anyone famous, the nearest is Jill Dando who is local to us, and went to the same school as me and buried in the same cemetery as my parents

I don't think any of my schoolmates got famous, but as a kid I did know the musician Max Richter. His dad was my dad's boss and he went to the local public school.

Wow, look at you sewing a cute dress and reusing and up cycling too!

It's nicer to try something different, and this is the extent of my creativity

That's just the cutest. For a moment I thought it was for you and thought it'd be cute with stockings and a woolly cardi and boots. But no, it's for someone even cuter, no offence.

The insta algo keeps throwing up these reels of people turning big cardigans into two pieces or rags into colourful trousers. I hate sewing but find these things fascinating. However I think you need a certain frame to pull it off - some people would literally look good in rags.

You have very nice fashion sense, in fact I can picture that outfit. And no offence taken, she's so cute with bags of attitude 🥰

You never know, you might enjoy sewing, just like you're knitting now

😍 I think she really was impressed—she was left speechless…! I love it when I see someone create something like that with their own hands. I remember a day when you spoke about certain people’s talents, but honestly, you’re the teacher here… sewing projects, gardening… but what else are you going to surprise us with??? I’ll be commissioning a little bag from you, like a cute and practical mini backpack for my bike outings.

A backpack!!! That's really pushing my skills. I may be clever 😅😅 but not that clever 😜

Pues es un reto para ti. Tienes un año y medio para eso, voy a ir a buscarla personalmente.

looking at the process I thought we were going to see you modelling it, then thought, hmm that is a bit small, very small. Then the big reveal LOL

Haha! That would be going back to the swinging 60s days, ultra minis!

Happy Days LOL

I was just about to say that it looked very small, but when I saw it on a small child, it all made sense. Sewing isn't easy, and it's truly a life-saving thing. Like an organ transplant, the jeans will live on!

That's a very good analogy, a very nice way to look at our belongings

Ooh, this is too cute, @livinguktaiwan ! I thought it was an adult dress at first, and was wondering if you'd be adding any more length to it 🤗😍 It must be challenging these days to cater to the youngest folks' tastes; either way, she looks fabulous, and will likely develop a strong attachment to it over time 🥳🥰

Hahaha! Not that I had planned it, but the title turned out to be a little surprise click bait. You're the third person who's mentioned this 😅

Thanks for your lovely comment

It's really mind blowing. I also want to do this for my little sister, she is asking it for a long time. I think now I don't have to buy it from the shop. Now I can make it from my own and give to her.
IMPRESSIVE!!!

It's very simple to make, of I can do it anyone can

This is so unique and awesome

Thanks

It turns out really beautiful and she rocks it best. Its worth the time and energy.

Thanks

You're welcome
