Hi, it has been a while since I last posted about my cooking. My husband said my cooking has greatly improved though I do not always showcase what I cook on a daily basis.
However since I cooked something a bit out of the norm, I decided to record the steps down to share with you here on Hive.
I cooked Lu Rou Fan or 卤肉饭in Chinese that means Braised Pork Belly in Five Spices!!!!
This is the husband's favorite and I have not bought pork belly cut for a long while because it is very expensive these days. Some weeks ago, the husband said he wanted pork belly so I spent on it. It is now Rm40+ per kg!
Basically the steps of cooking this dish is generally easy because what makes the difference is the marinade and make sure you marinate the meat long enough. The best will be letting the marinade sit overnight with the pork.
Ingredients needed:
- 500g of pork belly
- 4 cooked eggs
- 5 spice powder
- light soy
- dark soy
- oyster sauce
- cooking or rice wine (optional)
- garlic powder
- spring onions
- sesame oil
- minced garlic
- corn starch
Step 1
Marinate the pork belly after it is cut with some rice wine, oyster sauce, light soy sauce, dark soy sauce, garlic powder and sesame oil. Let it marinate the meat for at least half an hour but best is few hours or overnight.
Step 2
Boil some eggs to cook them up and peel their skin off.
Step 3
Heat up some oil and sautee the minced garlic with the spring onions stalks. I forgot that my garlic was really fine so I burnt them a bit, oops! 😅
Step 4
Add in the marinated pork belly into the pan to brown them and cook them.
Step 5
Add in some water to boil the pork and simmer them down.
Step 6
Add in some more 5 spice powder. I especially like this five spice powder that is from the north. I think it is fragrant and of better quality since my mum-in-law introduced it to me.
Step 7
Add in some corn starch mixed with water to the mixture to help thicken it.
Step 8
Add in the boiled eggs.
Now the process is basically waiting for it to simmer and the pork belly to soften in about 1 hour. Cook under low fire and stor from time to time.
Step 9
Last but not least, garnish with a generous amount of spring onions!!
Then it is done and ready to be served!
