Last week, I set up a community vote about potentially rewarding repetitive threads that use the #freecompliments tag. I appreciate the input of everyone who voted and wrote out their reasoning.
Outcome of the Vote
The votes were nearly unanimous: we’re no longer going to be rewarding repetitive daily threads with votes or HSBI. We’re going to focus on rewarding original content. Should you end up posting a repetitive thread every so often, we’ll likely overlook it because it’s primarily original content, and frankly the predominance of originality is most important. We’re not going to memorize your Threads lol.
We’re also going to implement this new reward policy for the Monthly Threads Engagement Contest. The occasional, rare repeat isn’t going to hurt anyone, but if we see someone trying to game the contest by repeating content over and over, that would result in a disqualification, as it’s unfair to others who create original content.
In my role, I’ll still be putting out some repetitive content, particularly the daily mental health initiative threadcasts (primarily because those disappear after 12 hours) and promotional content (i.e. certain descriptions of our initiatives, daily themes, and intermittently motivational content). The remainder will be original. Regardless, I’ve ensured that the community curators don’t vote on my content, so that I’m not gaming the system to my advantage.
Furthermore, we’re not going to actively punish anyone who posts repetitive threads. The only exception is absolute spam (i.e. someone repeating the same thread with the tag numerous times per day, thus preventing it from being viewed and used appropriately). Thus far, this has not been an issue and we’re not anticipating that it will become one in the near future.
Conclusion
We’re going to focus our votes and HSBI on original Threads instead of repetitive content! Thank you to everyone who participated in shaping the direction of the community.
