TODAY'S TOPIC:
DOWNSIZING THE ENEMY
BIBLE TEXTS:
1 Samuel 17:20-37

A focus on God downsizes the enemy.

THE MESSAGE:
All Israel were cowering because of the threats of Goliath until David arrived at the scene. We know that David eventually defeated the enemy: but how did he do it? The first thing he did was to down size the enemy.
Saul and all the soldiers of Israel saw Goliath as a champion and a war lord but David did not see him that way. David placed the giant beside the LORD of hosts. As he looked up, he saw the LORD and also saw the giant. Now, come to think of it, God and Goliath, who is bigger? God and Goliath, who will lose in the fight? The obvious answer to this question is that God is bigger and stronger than Goliath and of course, God is the winner of the battle. lt was this kind of mental disposition that empowered David to face the Philistine champion and he defeated him.
While others saw Goliath as a problem, David saw him as an opportunity. Others saw Goliath as a target too big to hit, but David saw him as a target too big to miss. The truth is that whenever you draw closer to God, you will discover that your problems will diminish in size. David leaves for us today a very important lesson on how to deal with threats that confronts us. We must learn to rely on the 'bigness' of our God and as we focus on it, the size of the enemy will be so small that it will lose its terror. So you don't have to be afraid of any Goliath.
