Most of the Chinese Malaysians are came from Southern part of mainland China. I'd like to highlight this part so you have an idea of the sub-ethnicity and the wide variety of Chinese categorize themselves.
Generally, theres 3 sub category of Chinese dialects in Malaysia. Majority of them speaks in Cantonese, which is the general dialects of Guangdong province. Hokkien, which is the same as Bun Lum dialecrs used in Taiwan, deriative from Fujian province. And Hakka, which is a mixture of multiple dialects from the Southern region.
Now, how is the the restaurant called themselves Hainanese? Well, Hainan is also an Island Province in southern China, which has their own dialects. The best part of Hainanese in Malaysia being, they're known for their excellence coffee making skills and fusioned western food.
Back in the old days before the country being taken over by politicians, then live a harmony time where restaurants serve porkchops. Hainanese restaurant being one of those type of western food restaurant that still serves "somewhat" authentic pork chops in Malaysia. And now, due to Halal and to accommodate other religions, we don't normally have pork chops anymore.
Yut Kee being one of those old school Hainanese restaurant that still serve the old recipe. I must say sorry to my Muslim friends, but if you don't mind, their Chicken chop is just as good, if not better! The above picture of junior ordered his peanut butter and french toast, i guess he took an instant regret. Even the peanut butter is handmade locally, in that shop!
Coffee, remain as old school as it could. The older days we drank caramelized coffee, I'm taling about 30/40 years ago. Imagine roasting coffee bean with palm sugar. Its serious business if your stomach cant take that kind of beating, you could get a gastric for drinking a cup of CARBON.
Vast variety of local food available as well. Home minister got herself a bowl of Nyonya Laksa. It's a bowl of sweet, sour and spicy noodle. If you're into this kinda thing, feel free to enjoy them. Overall, Yut Kee hold its standard and i have not came back for 20 years, partly due to the cramp space and the location of the shop, strategically located at the busy downtown of Kuala Lumpur.
