Do you like veggies? Today, I am excited to share my story about yesterday’s school feeding program. My schedule is every Friday, but my groupmates were absent, so I was the only one who cooked and prepared the food for the kids. Every time I see the kids happy while eating. I become happier and more inspire to cook again and again.
I started very early in the morning. The first dish I prepared was monggo with sponge gourd and malunggay leaves. The monggo was already given by the school, so I soaked it the night before and biled it early at home. This dish is very simple, but it is full of nutrients that the kids need to grow strong and healthy.
The smell of garlic and onion sauteing in the pan made me even more excited. Then I added the boiled monggo, the chopped sponge gourd, and the malunggay leaves. The green color of the veggies made the dish look so fresh and inviting. It felt good to cook something healthy for the children.
After finishing the monggo, I prepared the next recipe – pancakes! We used Magnolia pancake flour, two egg and some cooking oil. It was easy to make, I mixed the batter until it was smooth and then cooked the, one by one on the pan. Soon, the smell of sweet pancakes filled the room. Pancakes are the children’s favorite, so I made sure to cook enough for everyone.
To complete the meal, we also had dried fish (dilis). I fried them until crispy and golden brown. The smell was strong, but it made me feel at home because dried fish is a common food we eat our community. I knew the kids would enjoy it because it adds a salty and crunchy taste to the meal.
When everything was ready, I arranged the food nicely and called the children to eat. They came running with big smiles on their faces. Some of the, even clapped and washed their hands when they saw the pancakes! I warmed my heart.
As they eat, I could see their happy faces and hear their laughter. Some kids even said Thank you and made me feel so proud. Cooking for the, is not just about giving food, it is sharing love and joy to them.
This day I taught me that even simple dishes can bring so much happiness when cooked with love. I learned that it doesn’t matter if I am alone, I can still so something meaningful for others. Feeding program like this are important because they help children stay healthy and active in school.
I went home tired but very happy. My heart was full of joy because I know the kids enjoyed their meal. I cant wait for next Friday to cook again. If you want to try something new at hoe, you can make monggo with sponge gourd and malunggay too! It is healthy, delicious, and budget friendly. And of course, pancakes will always be a hit for kids.
